LIKE A MUSTARD SEED (MARK 4:26-34)

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “Like a mustard seed”. The mustard seed starts as a tiny seed, but when properly cared for, it grows to be the largest among the garden plants. The lesson we learn from the mustard seed is small and unnoticeable but eventually, it becomes significantly noticeable as it grows and expands. We shall reflect on the fact that the Kingdom of God is like the mustard seed expanding through the mission of the Church.

Jesus compared the Kingdom of God to the mustard seed when He said ““What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” (Mark 4:30-32). Jesus meant that the Kingdom of God has been inaugurated on earth by Him and like the mustard seed it will steadily grow and expand to the benefit of those who believe in Him. The Church is part of the Kingdom of God on earth and also represents the mustard seed which continues to grow and expand as many are brought into the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

How can the Kingdom of God grow like the mustard seed on earth? Dear friend, to ensure the Kingdom of God grows and expands like a mustard seed, Jesus commissioned us “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20). Our responsibility is to obey the great commission by scattering the Good News or the Gospel and the Holy Spirit will cause us to grow and expand like the mustard seed. The more we preach the Gospel the more many people will be saved and the expansion of the Kingdom of God will take place. The Church must prioritize mission and evangelism in the 21st Century. Many Churches have stopped evangelizing or have prioritised chapel buildings, and welfare issues of the congregants and businesses over going out to make disciples of all nations. God is counting on the Church to be the mustard seed to grow and expand so that the lost souls who are birds shall perch on its branches and be saved.

Regardless of the fact that the kingdom of God is expanding, some people will not be part of its future glory. It is for this reason, when “someone said to Jesus, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” (Luke 13:23-24). Those who will not be to able enter the Kingdom of God are the evil doers who pretend to love the Lord and serve Him but do the will of the God, …“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ Matthew 7:21-23. Always remember that as a believer or a Christian you are part of the ever expanding or growing Kingdom of God, therefore be faithful to the end. Paul explained it further when he wrote that “… our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.” (Philippians 3:20-21). Shalom.

In summary, we have reflected on the theme “Like A Mustard Seed”. We have discovered that the Kingdom of God is like the mustard seed expanding through the church the mission and evangelism of the church.

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, guide our steps and help us to remain faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ so that we shall forever remain citizens of the ever-growing and expanding Kingdom of God. Amen.
