THE FALL OF SAUL (1 CHRONICLES 10:1-14)
REFLECTION
The fall of Saul is the theme for our reflection. Saul was the first King of Israel unfortunately he died in battle with the Philistines. We shall reflect on the fact that our calling and elevation comes from God hence unfaithfulness to Him will lead to our fall. Again, we are replaceable therefore we must obey and remain faithful to God.
Beloved in the Lord, Saul became unfaithful to God and the consequences were regrettable. It is recorded as historical fact in Chronicles that “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, 14 and did not inquire of the LORD.” (1 Chronicles 10:13-14) One fact that runs through the Bible is the consequences of unrepentance, sin, disobedience and unfaithfulness to suffering, hardship and death. Again the worst form of unfaithfulness is to deny the Sovereignty of God over one’s life to seek the help and guidance of other gods or spirits. It is for this reason that we are told in Exodus 20:3-5, ” “You shall have no other gods before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God…” (Exodus 20:3-5). We must do well in all our endeavours to remain faithful to God lest we incur His wrath upon our lives.
Again, it is important to note that we are replaceable! We told that because of Saul’s disobedience and unfaithfulness, “…the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.” (1 Chronicles 10:14) Let us be careful the way we carry ourselves when are elevated by God. We must not forget our past and God’s faithfulness to us throughout our life’s journey. Sometimes we soon forget where the Lord took us from, we are filled with over-bloated self-importance when we are elevated at our offices, church and community. We are filled with pride because of the power and wealth at our disposal. We no longer obey the Word of God nor do we serve Him in humility. Beloved in the Lord, no matter who you are and whatever position you think you occupy in the world for which you have become disobedient, boastful and unfaithful to God, you are replaceable! Like King Saul, your replacement may be done in the most humiliating and embarrassing manner. It is a privilege and by grace to be called or chosen by God to serve. It is also God’s doing when we are elevated or promoted to a higher office. The Psalmist has taught to appreciate the Lord’s faithful when he wrote, “1 Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—” (Psalms 103:1-2).
In summary, we have learnt that our calling and elevation come from God hence unfaithfulness to Him will lead to our fall. Again, we are replaceable there must must obey and remain faithful to God. Shalom.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, strengthen us to remain obedient and faithful to God at all times and may His glory and protective hands never depart from us.
