HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN AMONG YOU (JOHN 8:1-11)
REFLECTION
“He who is without sin among you” is the theme for our reflection. Sin is disobedience to God. The theme invites us to identify a sinless and perfect human. Apart from Jesus, there is no other human being who is without sin.
Jesus invites us to show mercy and be measured in our judgement or treatment of others who have sinned. It is, for this reason that Jesus questioned the men who wanted to stone the adulterous woman, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7). We must show compassion and mercy to others because we may not be righteous after all. Jesus said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:3-5) Sometimes we think our sins are less important and negligible and that of others are grievous and ought to be punished severely. However, before God, every disobedience whether small or big is a sin that has an eternal consequence of hellfire if we do not repent and seek salvation through Jesus Christ.
Again, it must be our desire to help those who are under the bondage of sin to be liberated and transformed. Our first response to a person who has sinned should not be the destruction of the person but to seek the person’s salvation. Let us always remember that “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) Let demonstrate and replicate this love to others who are in the bondage of sin. We must however not condone unrepentant sinners or people who are bent on doing evil. We must frown on evil or sin but do our best to work on the person’s repentance. We must continue the mission of Christ by inviting to sinners to take refuge in the arms of Christ even as we declare to them “Go now and leave your life of sin.” (John 8:11)
In summary, we have learnt that we are without sin therefore we must be compassionate and merciful to others. Again, we must remember that we were once like those whom we judge as sinners but God loved and saved us, therefore, we must yearn for their salvation, liberation and restoration through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Shalom.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, grant us the heart of compassion to show mercy and lead the lost perishing to the loving and saving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
