“BEHOLD, THIS DREAMER COMES” (GENESIS 37:17B-28)
REFLECTION
“Behold, this dreamer comes” is the theme for our reflection. A dream is a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep. We shall reflect on the fact where there is a dreamer there are also envious dream killers. Joseph was the dreamer and His brothers were the envious dream killers.
Dear friend, it is good news and a blessing to have a member of a family who dreams of a great and prosperous future. Such dreams are God’s way of reassuring the person and his family of His glory. This was the situation Joseph found himself in. However, because of envy and our fallen nature, there are some family members and friends who become uncomfortable when good things happen in the life of one of their own. It is for this reason that when Joseph’s brothers “saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him. 19 “Here comes that dreamer! ” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.” (Genesis 37:18-20). Eventually there was a plot twist, “when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt. (Genesis 37:28) Dear friend, unknown to the brothers of Joseph, Joseph, the dreamer was the source of their blessings and prosperity. They were threatened by his dreams. They refused to acknowledge the favour and the hand of God upon his life, therefore, they sold him into slavery to ensure that his dreams would not materialise or come to fruition. Similarly, some people are hated simply because the favour of God is upon their lives. People may hate you because of your prospects, dreams and the greatness that radiates through you. People may conspire against you because of the grace and greatness that has been bestowed upon your life by God.
It is important to note that our dreams and faith are tested when the plans of the wicked unfold in our lives. Joseph has taught us to remain resilient in faith and never give up on our dreams. After many years, of suffering and elevation, Joseph said to his brothers when they came to seek forgiveness, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 21 So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. (Genesis 50:20-21). Dear friend, this reveals to us that we must “…hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23). Let us never waste our time and energy conspiring with others to kill the dream of others. Certain, we have our dreams to fulfil. Let us rather spend time working hard and praying to God to help us achieve our dreams and become a blessing to our generation.
In summary, we must learn to support others to fulfil their dreams as believers. We must never become envious and killers of people’s dreams. We have every opportunity to succeed if we also focus our time in prayer and our energy working to fulfil our dreams. Shalom.
PRAYER
Almighty God, protect us from dream killers and may your will be done in our lives. Amen.
