MOURNING TO DANCING (PSALM 30:1-12)
REFLECTION
“Mourning to dancing” is the theme for our reflection. To mourn means to express sorrow or great sadness. Dance, on the other hand, is a form of creative expression through physical movement that includes rhythmic movements that accompany music. Usually, people dance when they are happy, therefore mourning to dancing means from sorrow to happiness. We shall reflect on the fact we move from a state of mourning to dancing because of God’s faithfulness to us.
In Psalm 30:1-3, David expresses the centrality of God in the life of a believer. In other words, as mortals, we cannot survive without God because He is our protector, healer and redeemer therefore, David implores us to “Sing the praises of the LORD, you his faithful people; praise his holy name.” (Psalms 30:4) From Psalm 30:5-10, David, continues to demonstrate, God’s faithfulness to those who call on Him for help and restoration. We see a summary of the impact of God’s faithfulness, glory or presence in the lives of those who trust in Him. David summed up his testimony of God’s faithfulness when he wrote, “You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, 12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. LORD my God, I will praise you forever.” (Psalms 30:11-12).
Beloved in the Lord, no condition is permanent but God’s faithfulness is constant and permanent in the lives of those who put their trust and hope in Him. We are reminded in Ecclesiastes 3:1,4 that “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance”. In other words, times of sorrow, pain and frustrations are inevitable in our lives, however, as feeble or weak mortals, our faith and trust are in the Lord our protector, healer and redeemer who can turn our mourning to dancing. In other words, “…those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:31). Again, we are reminded that no matter our sorrows and anxieties, God will in His own time cause us to experience a time of joying and dancing, for “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” (Lamentations 3:22-24) We are greatly admonished to be strong by studying and trusting His Word and praying without ceasing when we are hit by the storms of life. As we console ourselves with His Word or Scripture through prayer, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23)
In summary, we have learnt through David’s testimony of God’s faithfulness that God is our protector, healer and redeemer, therefore, we can move from a state of mourning to dancing when we put our hope and trust in Him. Shalom.
