THE EARTH WAS CORRUPT BEFORE GOD (GENESIS 6:11-22)
REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “The earth was corrupt before God” To be corrupt means to be spiritually and morally disconnected from God. Again to be corrupt means to be disobedient or take delight in living a sinful life. The earth was corrupt before God, which means humanity became spiritually and morally disconnected from God such that the earth was no longer worthy of its existence. We shall reflect on the fact that the corruption of the earth is a result of sin or doing our will instead of God’s will.
Beloved in the Lord, we become spiritually and morally corrupt if we make decisions that please the flesh or bring us pleasure rather than following the Word or will of God for our lives. “Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. 12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. (Genesis 6:11-12). Humanity had disappointed God by misusing the power of the will that was granted mankind when God said “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness,” (Genesis 1:26). Humanity had failed to maintain the perfect image of God but rather corrupted it because of their inclination to please themselves rather than their Creator. Initially, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. (Genesis 1:31) but all that He made had been corrupted by evil actions and inactions of humanity. Today, some people are still in the business of corrupting what God had made by tempering with their gender, engaging in homosexuality and lesbianism, having sex with animals, practising incest, manufacturing nuclear weapons to cause destruction to people and their environments and all manner of abominations. COVID-19 and other infectious and destructive viruses and diseases are also examples of how humanity has corrupted the earth before God. Let us be considerate in our choices and decisions because our actions and inaction affect not only ourselves as humans but creation as a whole. Why did God not destroy only the disobedient and corrupt human beings but decided to destroy all that He had created? Our choices as humans affect other creations.
It is important to note that God is patient, gracious and merciful to the repentant sinner but an unrepentant sinner would incur the wrath and judgement of the Lord, It is for this reason “God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. (Genesis 6:13-14) Beloved in the Lord, God will always save those who keep to His covenant promise and commandment. However, to the unrepentant and disobedient people, Paul wrote to admonish them, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23). In other words, the earth was corrupt before God because of the unrepentance of humanity. In the end, the unrepentance of humanity led to the destruction of creation except for Noah and his family and the animals that were saved.
Today, we continue to live in a corrupt world, but glory be to God for saving us through our Lord Jesus, for “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Again, Jesus has assured us that “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:9-10). Dear friend, the earth is corrupt before God and He will surely come to destroy it at His appointed time but “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16). Let us accept and believe Jesus as Lord and Saviour and be saved from the impending wrath and destruction of this corrupt earth.
In summary, we have learnt that the corruption of the earth is a result of sin or doing our will instead of God’s will. We have the opportunity to be saved from this corrupt earth through our Lord Jesus Christ. The decision or choice is ours to make now. Just as we have the will to sin and repent, God also has the will to destroy or bring judgment upon a corrupt earth and its inhabitants.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit, strengthen us to please the Lord by doing His will so that will not incur His wrath upon our lives. Amen.
