THERE WILL BE FAMINES… (MATTHEW 24:1-8)
REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “There will be famines” Famine is defined as the most severe kind of hunger crisis. It is very rare, but when it does occur, it means that there is an extreme shortage of food and several children and adults within a certain area are dying of hunger daily. We shall reflect on the fact that although there will be famines before the coming of Jesus, our lifestyles as human beings are inducing climate change famines.
As part of the signs that will precede the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, “There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.” (Matthew 24:7-8). Although we experience some of the signs mentioned by Jesus Christ, famine largely has been induced by our reckless mismanagement of natural resources such as indiscriminate cutting down of trees and the destruction of our forest reserves. Food security and access to good drinking water may become issues many African countries will be battling with in the next few years or more because of the surge in illegal mining and wanton destruction of our arable lands. Farmlands are being destroyed to give way to illegal mining. Natural disasters are bound to happen but we also have the great responsibility of not hastening them or contributing to their occurance.
The interesting phenomenon is that while fossil fuel is being burnt in the West, its ecological ramifications or consequences is being felt by the poor and vulnerable countries elsewhere. Humanity is destroying the world faster than it was predicted by Jesus. We are experiencing human-induced famine and destruction of the earth rather than the apocalypse that will precede the coming of our Saviour. Let us continue to take care of God’s creation until such a time when the creator decides to destroy it Himself to give way to the eschatological arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In summary, we have been reminded that although there will be famines before the coming of Jesus, our lifestyles as human beings are inducing climate change famines. We are called to be good stewards of the environment even before the coming of our Saviour.
PRAYER
Dear Lord grant us wisdom to manage and enjoy the natural resources you have blessed us with even before the apocalypse and eschatological appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
