THE STATUS OF A DISCIPLE (MARK 10:35-45)

Jesus teaches His disciples the type of leadership required of them.

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is ‘the status of a disciple.’ Status refers to the position or rank of a person. Jesus draws the attention of His disciples to the status of a disciple. These disciples will later become Apostles and leaders of the early church. It was important for Jesus to orient them on the kind of leadership status required to lead God’s people.

Initially, James and John, two of the disciple had envisaged sharing the same status with Jesus in His glory.  They pleaded with Him to grant them positions at His left and right (Mark 10:35-39).  It is important to note that to qualify to share Jesus’ glory with Him, you must not be arrogant or lord it over people as the Gentile rulers did ” Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45)

The status of a disciple is that of a servant-leader. When we have served with humility and diligence then we shall be promoted to share Jesus’ glory with Him, for Jesus said “…to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.” (Mark 10:40).  In other words, those who follow the perfect example of Christ are the ones who qualify to sit at His left and right. Merely seeking to share Jesus’ glory is not enough, we must follow His footsteps and become servant-leaders like Jesus to spread the Gospel and win more souls into the Kingdom of God.

In our current generation, we have some people who claim to be men and women of God but have made themselves demigods to be worshipped by their followers. The status of some of these so-called pastors and prophets are not that of a servant-leader but a boss and superior who expects their followers to worship them and follow every unbiblical teaching and command they give them. The followers of these so-called pastors and prophets become physical and spiritual captives of these charlatans. My dear friend, the status of everyone who follows Jesus as His disciple and representative in the world must be that of a humble servant-leader. The world has heard the Gospel being preached many times, the world now wants to see the Gospel alive, active, and proven in the lives of Christians. If you are a leader or in a leadership position as a Christian at your church, workplace, or society, always remember that your status is a servant-leader and not a bossy and domineering leader. However being a humble servant-servant leader does not mean you must be fearful, condone and tolerate indiscipline and sin wherever you find yourself including the church, for Paul admonishes us that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant(or the servant-leader) of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Shalom
