BARTIMAEUS WITNESSES THE MESSIAH (MARK 10:46-52)
REFLECTION
“Bartimaeus witnesses the Messiah” is the theme for our reflection. We see Jesus’ compassion towards blind Bartimaeus when he calls upon Jesus to restore his sight. (Mark 10:46-52). This must be the response of all Christians and the Church towards the marginalised in our societies. We must demonstrate compassion and love to them through our social ministry so that through our efforts we can give them hope and a reason to see a brighter future.
Dear friend, blindness may be due to an injury to the eye, eye disease or in some cases some people can be born blind. Bartimaeus was born blind. We understand that the purpose of His blindness was for God’s name to be glorified through his encounter with Jesus our Messiah. In John 9:1-3 “As Jesus went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” In other words, we may experience challenges or misfortunes in life for a divine purpose. The divine purpose is for God’s name to be glorified and honoured. When God’s name is glorified we also experience healing and restoration as the manifestation of the power of our Saviour Jesus Christ in our lives.
Again, Jesus is the remedy, healer and Chief Priest who can heal all types of blindness. The question is, are you willing to see or are you comfortable with your kind of blindness, be it physical, moral or spiritual? Bartimaeus was not comfortable with his blindness therefore “he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Mark 10:48). Beloved in the Lord, Jesus hears our shout and passionate cry for healing and restoration which is why He said to Bartimaeus “Go, your faith has healed you.” Immediately he(Bartimaeus) received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.” (Mark 10:52). Jesus is the only healer, Messiah and High Priest who can make the blind see because “Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.” (Hebrews 7:24-26) Will you also follow Jesus after He has restored your sight or will you return to your old way of life? The choice is yours to make but choose to witness the Messiah and your life will never be the same.
In summary, we have learnt that sometimes we may go through challenges for the divine purpose of glorifying God’s name. Again, when we call on the name of the Lord, we shall experience restoration through our Messiah, Jesus Christ.
PRAYER
Jesus, our Messiah, may we continue to experience Your presence in our lives and may Your presence bring us healing and restoration. Amen.
