MARRIAGE IN CANA (JOHN 2:1-11)

REFLECTION

Marriage in Cana is the theme for our reflection. Marriage is a holy union instituted by God for the benefit of a man and a woman who have agreed to share their lives, blessings and burdens in love and in fulfilment of God’s will. The journey of marriage begins with a marriage ceremony. Jesus and His disciples were invited to witness a marriage ceremony at Cana. We shall reflect on the fact that when we invite Jesus into our lives we shall experience the glory of God.

Beloved in the Lord, those who invite Jesus into their lives and affairs experience the glory of God in their lives. We are told “On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. (John 2:1-2) When the wine was in shortage, the presence of Jesus averted a situation of scarcity and disgrace and brought about refreshment, joy and abundance. When we invite Jesus into our lives, God intervenes and makes the impossibility possible. Indeed, Jesus assured us when He said to the disciples, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26) Abraham and Sarah were told “Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” (Genesis 18:14). Have you invited Jesus into your marriage? Is Jesus part of your business and daily endeavours? Have you surrendered all to Jesus even as you do that which is humanly possible?

Let us remember that no condition of failure and embarrassment is permanent, we experience transformation when Jesus comes into our lives. Imagine a shortage of wine in the middle of your wedding ceremony. Your guests will feel dissatisfied and certainly rate your wedding ceremony as a failure and poorly organised. It will certainly be the talk of the town. People may refer to it in the future when wedding experiences are discussed. Can you imagine the feeling of failure and embarrassment a couple are likely to experience on that special day of their lives? To avoid this embarrassment, Mary, the mother of Jesus said to the servants “…Do whatever he(Jesus) tells you.” (John 2:5). They obeyed Him and the water they poured into the jars turned into wine. We are told,  “… the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” (John 2:9-10) Dear friend, once again when we invite Jesus into our lives we shall experience the glory of God in our hopeless situations. John confirmed that “What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. (John 2:11). Let us continually walk with Jesus through prayer, faith and obedience and His glory will never depart from us.

In summary, we have discovered that when we invite Jesus into our lives we shall experience the glory of God. Let us therefore surrender all to Jesus even as we do that which is humanly possible. Shalom.
