A LOVE SONG (SONG OF SONGS 2:8-17)

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “a love song”. A love song is a song that expresses romantic feelings, affection and desires for one’s beloved or spouse. We shall reflect on the fact that a love song triggers fondness and enhances deep and intense emotions among couples.

Beloved in the Lord, a love song triggers deeper and intense emotions among couples or lovers. In Song of Songs 2:10-14, we discover a picture of a couple who have been married but the groom has been away from his bride for some time, at his return, the winter was over, therefore, the groom sings a love song to the bride about how he fondly misses her sweet voice and lovely face. In his love song to the bride, he invites her to come out to experience the beauty of nature and the renewal of life with him. “Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away, for behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land… O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the crannies of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.” (Song of Songs 2:10-12,14). A love song is a work of art and couples are greatly encouraged to sing love songs together or listen to them together to spice up their relationship.

I believe there are more love songs written or sung by musicians than any other types of songs about human relationships or interactions on earth. A love song reminds couples of their commitment to one another and the bond they share. The power or impact of music and for that matter love songs cannot be underestimated in love relationships and marriage. We usually classify love songs as worldly music. Worldly music or song is simply music that is human-centred or focused on human relations and activities. Some worldly or mundane songs are profane. A profane worldly song is not edifying because it promotes immorality and encourages disobedience to God. It is, for this reason, Christians and for that matter, Christian couples must be discerning when listening to love songs and any other worldly song. Some songs classified as love songs promote fornication and adultery. Christian couples are however encouraged to listen and even draw inspiration from love songs that promote mutual respect, faithfulness, genuine affection, contentment with one’s spouse or beloved, sacrifice and all the virtues that will lead to a long-lasting, fulfilling and enjoyable relationship.

Dear friend in Christ, It is important to understand that Spiritual songs and Gospel music inspire us spiritually and draw us closer to God but love songs inspire us romantically and draw us closer to our spouses. Many Christian couples have lacked the impact and missed the beauty of love songs in their relationships or marriages because they are under the erroneous impression that listening to or singing love songs is a sin. If listening, singing or dancing to love songs is immoral or sinful then Song of Songs should not have been considered a canonised book in the Bible. The book of Song of Songs is dedicated to romantic love although we may have allegorical interpretations that allude to the love relationship and bond that exist between Christ and the Church. We are encouraged in today’s reflection to enjoy love songs and sing love songs to our beloved husband or wife to express our thoughts and feeling for him or her. If God instituted marriage on the basis of love between a man and a woman then there is absolutely nothing wrong if couples decide to express themselves through the language and art of love songs or take delight in drawing inspiration from love songs to keep the flame of their mutual affection and love alive. Many Gospel musicians or Christian musicians have deserted the area of love songs and are only concentrating on Spiritual and Gospel songs, they are encouraged to also explore the area of love songs since it will be equally beneficial to Christian couples.

In summary we have discovered the importance or impact of a love song in our marriage relationships. We have learnt that a love song triggers fondness and enhances deep and intense emotions among couples. Shalom.

PRAYER

Almighty God, we thank you for the gift of musical talents and creativity, may we utilize our musical talents to compose and sing love songs that will revive marriages and relationships at the verge of breaking down and inspire others to keep the flame of love burning. Amen
