EYES:LAMPS OF THE BODY (MATTHEW 6:22-23)
REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “Eyes: lamps of the body.” In other words, the eyes are the lamps of the body. Eyes are for sight, and without them, we shall live in darkness. A good or healthy eye is able to see light, thereby allowing the body to move about safely. We shall reflect on the fact that we need healthy spiritual and moral eyes to navigate our lives on the path of righteousness.
Dear friends, for our lives to be on the spiritually and morally sound path, we need healthy moral and spiritual eyes. Jesus uses the functions of the eyes to teach a moral and spiritual lesson. He said “If your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:23) Similarly, when one’s eyes are morally and spiritually blind, the person makes poor decisions that have adverse effects on him or her both physically and spiritually. The wisdom and discernment that comes from the Word of God represent our moral and spiritual eyes and the Word of God represents the light. In other words, the Word of God is the light that gives us wisdom, understanding and discernment to live morally upright and spiritually fulfilling lives to please God.
When the light or the Word of God gives us wisdom, we shall make better choices that will demonstrate our faith in God at all times. We will not be like the unwise servant who will be torn between two masters, trying to please both two masters and end up being faithful to none. 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24). We are reminded by the Psalmist that “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. (Psalms 36:9). Again, the Psalmist’s confession supports the fact that the Word of God is the source of light for our spiritual eyes when He wrote “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (Psalms 119:105). In other words, without the Word of God, we shall remain or walk in darkness for “The unfolding of His words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” (Psalms 119:130) If we cannot see spiritually we shall make inappropriate choices or make decisions that do not reflect the will of God.
Ultimately, when the Word of God becomes the lamp of our eyes, our spiritual and moral lives will please God and we shall be set free from the bondage of sin for “5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5). Let us consistently study the Word and apply it to our lives. When the Word of God opens our eyes or gives us light, Jesus assures us that “32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
In summary, we have discovered that we need healthy spiritual and moral eyes to navigate our lives on the path of righteousness. Again, for our spiritual and moral eyes to remain healthy, they need constant engagement with the Word which is the source of light for our lives. Shalom.
PRAYER
Holy Spirit empower us to rely on the Word of God as the source of light for our spiritual eyes, so that our entire lives will be illuminated with the will of the Lord to make decisions that please the Lord morally and spiritually. Amen
