THIS IS THE ONE, ANOINT HIM! (1 SAMUEL 16:1-13)
REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “This is the one, anoint him” To anoint means to ceremonially confer an office upon a priest or king by rubbing, smearing, or pouring oil on the head of the person to evoke God’s glory upon the person and to demonstrate his divine approval. Samuel was responsible for anointing the next King of Israel because God had rejected Saul, the substantive King, for His disobedience to God. We shall reflect on the fact that God is pleased with us and considers us worthy of His call when we continually prepare our hearts to serve Him.
Dear friend in Christ, God is pleased with us and considers us worthy of His call when we continually prepare our hearts to serve Him. The first Scripture reading testifies to this principle when God said to Samuel “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7). When David arrived, Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David. ” (1 Samuel 16:12-13). It is important to note that God is not impressed with how sharply we look or expensive we appear before Him in worship services neither is He impressed by our physical looks. God is greatly pleased with those who love Him and continue to have Him at heart in all that they do as believers. No wonder David says “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.( Psalms 19:14). Jesus also reminds us that God indeed looks on the heart when He said in Matthew 7:21 that “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21).
Beloved in the Lord, like David, preparing our hearts for God to consider us worthy of His calling and anointing means “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Deuteronomy 6:5). David has demonstrated that his heart was dedicated to the Lord even as he walked with Him each day of His life. When the time came to appoint a new King for Israel, God found him worthy of His calling and anointed him to become King of Israel. My dear friend, your faith in the Lord will shape your destiny. Imagine the unprecedented transformation from a Shepherd to a King. My dear friend, we are greatly encouraged to serve God with our whole hearts and in His own appointed time, God will find us worthy of His calling, anoint us and lift us from grass to grace and from a nonentity to an entity!
In summary, we have reflected on the fact that God is pleased with us and considers us worthy of His calling when we continually prepare our hearts to serve Him. May we also be elevated and anointed for service. Shalom.
