THE PROMISE-KEEPER (LUKE 1:57-66)

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “The Promise-Keeper.” The promise-keeper is an attribute of God that demonstrates His faithfulness and trustworthiness in the lives of believers. We shall reflect on the fact that we must believe in God because He is the Promise-keeper.

Beloved in the Lord, we must believe in God because He has a proven and trustworthy history of keeping His promises. Scripture has overwhelming evidence of the fact that God is a promise-keeper. Zachariah’s encounter with God is only an example of the countless times God had made promises and fulfilled them to the glory of His name. God promised Zachariah and Elizabeth a son whose name shall be John, although, Zachariah expressed doubts, that did not change God’s plan for their lives. “When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy…Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 All the neighbours were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things.” (Luke 1:57-58, 62-65) Dear friend, God fulfilled three promises. Firstly, the promise to give Zachariah and his wife a son (John 1:13). Secondly, the promise to set free the tongue of Zachariah after the child is born (John 1:20). Thirdly, the forerunner, who will prepare the way for our Lord Jesus Christ (John 3:3-6).

To further demonstrate that our God is the Promise-keeper, we are greatly encouraged by Angel Gabriel’s assurance to Mary in Luke 1:37 when He said “For no word from God will ever fail.” Again, to prove the timeless attribute of God as a Promise-Keeper, the psalmist wrote,  “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations.

The LORD is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. “(Psalms 145:13). My dear sister, brother and fellow believer, irrespective of our struggles or challenges, the Lord understands our situations and knows us by our names because He is our creator. He speaks through the voice of Jeremiah to us today, saying “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27-28). It is, for this reason, the Lord reminds us again in Jeremiah 33:2-3, “This is what the LORD says, he who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it—the LORD is his name: 3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:2-3) We human beings may make promises and fail in keeping them because we are limited in our strength and abilities, it is for this reason, that Jesus greatly encouraged us to turn to God who is the Promise-Keeper, ““With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26).

In summary, we have discovered that we must believe in God because He is the Promise-keeper. He is trustworthy and faithful to those who have a covenant relationship with Him.

PRAYER

Promise-keeping God, we thank you for loving and saving us. We commit all our needs into Your hands, may your promises continue to be fulfilled in our lives according to Your will. Amen.
