REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “The Good News Comes Closer” The Good News is a piece of positive information that brings relief, joy or gladness. In the Bible, Good News is God’s gracious love and promise of salvation for anyone in Christ Jesus. (John 3:16-17) The Good News Comes closer, which means God’s promise of Salvation is about to be fulfilled. We shall reflect on the fact that,
1. The Good News comes closer because God is faithful.
2. The Good News is now here for the salvation of all.

Firstly, the Good News comes closer because God is faithful. In other words, God is the promise-keeper, therefore, His promise of the Good News or salvation of the world was prophesied by His prophets and fulfilled through His servant Mary. God said to Prophet Nathan concerning the Kingdom of David, “The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom…Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever. ’” (2 Samuel 7:16,11-12)  Although King Solomon was the next King after David, God revealed to David that He will forever establish the Kingdom of David. David’s Kingdom would transcend the human dynasty until the birth of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God through Him. We witness God’s faithfulness to His Word when He brings the Good New closer to the world through Angel Gabriel. The Angel told Mary, You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:31-35) Beloved in the Lord, the coming closer of the Good News reveals to us that our God is faithful, dependable and trustworthy. Again, it reveals to us that God prioritised our salvation and kept His promise to send His Son to come and save the world. The Good News that was promised through the prophets of old had been fulfilled through the virgin Mary. Indeed we serve a covenant and promise keeping God! The first Advent which is the birth of Christ and His earthly ministry is the fulfilment of God’s promise to save the World. This is the Good News to all generations and people of the world.

Secondly, it is important to note that the Good News is no longer a promise but has been fulfilled. The Good News is now here for our salvation. Paul wrote in the conclusion of his letter to the Church in Rome, “Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith — 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen. (Romans 16:25-27) Beloved in the Lord, we have become beneficiaries of the Good News. The Good News was promised and fulfilled through the Jews for the benefit of all nations through faith. Jesus reassured us that His Salvation or the Good News is for all who believe in Him when He said “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” (John 3:14-17). Dear friend in Christ, the second advent will be God’s fulfilment of His judgement of the world and the ushering of believers into His Kingdom at the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is for this purpose, the writer of Hebrews admonished us, “let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another —and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:22-25) The Advent season should remind us of both the fulfilment of God’s promise of Salvation which we commemorate on Christmas day and His promise of the Seconding coming of our Lord Jesus Christ so that we would remain prepared through faith and obedience to His Word through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

In summary, we have discovered that The Good News comes closer because God is faithful. Again, the Good News is now here for the salvation of all, both the Jews and the Gentiles. Let us repent and accept the Good News and allow Jesus to dwell in our hearts as our Lord and Saviour so that we shall be found worthy of the Kingdom of God at His second Advent. Amen.
