REFLECTION

‘In search for dreamers’ is the theme for our meditation. A dream is a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep. The Scripture has proven that dreams do have interpretations and could be one of the ways God communicates to human beings. Joseph himself was a dreamer and at the same time gifted with the unique ability to interpret dreams.

On this occasion, two chief servants of Pharaoh were put in prison for an offence they had committed. Joseph, God’s chosen servants was also in the same prison for an offence he had not committed, however, Joseph became friends with these chief servants of Pharaoh one of whom was the chief cupbearer and the other the chief baker. In Genesis 40:12-23, these two chief servants had dreams related to their professions. Joseph’s interpretation of the chief baker’s dream was unfavourable but the chief cupbearer’s dream was favourable, therefore, he beseeched him to remember him when he is restored to his office when the dream materialise.

In our age and time, it appears God communicates to fewer people through dreams. Peter tells us in Act 2:17 that “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” Indeed, if the Spirit of God will enable believers to dream dreams then we are certainly in search of dreamers who will reveal God’s will to his people through dreams. The interpretation of dreams is also a unique gifts given to few people and it is a good thing to desire the gift of dreaming and interpretation of dreams.

Some few years ago a church member called me from Kumasi to narrate a dream she had about me. Although I did not understand the dream, I prayed about it. I was grateful to her. Dreams may be good or bad but when they are revealed to us we must consciously through prayer seek its interpretation from the Lord of the dreams and interpretations. Some Christians do not believe in dreams and more often than not make jokes out of dreams or fail to pray about it. Remember, God’s ways of communicating to us is not limited, dreams are part of His means of reaching out to us and today’s Scripture reading is not an exception. Joseph, Daniel and a host of others were recipients of God’s messages through dreams. Job further acknowledged the importance of dreams as one of God’s way of communicating His will to humanity when he said “For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, to turn them from wrongdoings and keep them from pride, to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.” (JOB 33:14-18) In other words, God can use dreams to speak to us.

Unfortunately, there are too many fake prophets and charlatans in our time or generation who deceive people under the pretext of dreams and its interpretation. It is for this Apostle John cautioned us, “… do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1) Again, Jeremiah has a cautions for us in Jeremiah 23:32 when he said, “Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” declares the LORD. “They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least,” declares the LORD.” Surely, we are in search of dreamers but not fake dreamers who will lead the people of God astray because of cheap fame and personal gains. “If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, ‘Let us go after other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.(Deuteronomy 13:1-3). May the Lord continue to reveal Himself and His will to us through dreams. Shalom.
