HIDDEN FOUNDATIONS (1 KINGS 5:1-12

REFLECTIONS

Hidden foundations is the theme for our reflection. A foundation refers the basis or groundwork of anything. It is the natural or prepared ground or base on which some structure rests. Hidden foundations means relationships that become a source of blessings for the next generation or posterity. Hidden foundations are friendly relationships that form the basis for future mutual benefits and prospects. King Solomon benefited from the long-lasting relationship between King David, his father, and Hiram, King of Tyre.

King Solomon’s preparational stage for the temple building was made easier by the hidden foundation laid by his father, King David. The hidden foundation was not in the form of a visible or tangible structure but it was in the form of a relationship. Solomon leveraged his father’s relationship with King Hiram from Tyre to source for the Cedars of Lebanon to build the temple. King Solomon sent a message to King Hiram, “So give orders that cedars of Lebanon be cut for me. My men will work with yours, and I will pay you for your men whatever wages you set. You know that we have no one so skilled in felling timber as the Sidonians.” 7 When Hiram heard Solomon’s message, he was greatly pleased and said, “Praise be to the LORD today, for he has given David a wise son to rule over this great nation.” 8 So Hiram sent word to Solomon: “I have received the message you sent me and will do all you want in providing the cedar and juniper logs.” (1 Kings 5:6-8)

The key lesson in today’s reflection is that the relationships we build today are the hidden foundation for our children’s success tomorrow. We may not live to see our dreams fulfilled but the relationship we establish today may be a blessing for the next generation. In other words, the relationship we invest in today will be the dividends our children will accrue tomorrow. David planned and yearned to build a temple but was unable to do so, however, his relationship with King Hiram made it easy for King Solomon to have access to valuable resources and services toward the fulfilment of King David’s dream and King Solomon’s ambition to build a temple for the Lord.

My dear friend, let us establish godly, meaningful and long-lasting relationships which will become the hidden foundations for posterity to strive.  It is also important to reconnect broken relationships to lay strong and hidden foundations for the next generation. Jonathan was dead yet his son Mophibosheth benefited from his father’s relationship with David when “David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?… When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honour. David said, “Mephibosheth!” “At your service,” he replied. 7 “Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table. ” (2 Samuel 9:1,6-7). Beloved in the Lord, the fruitful relationships we establish today are the hidden foundations of success and blessings our children will benefit from in the future.

In summary, we have discovered that the relationships we establish today are priceless. These relationships are the hidden foundation of success for ourselves and our future generations, therefore, let us treat everyone we meet in life with respect and dignity. Shalom.

PRAYER

Almighty God, strengthen us to value our relationship and fellowship with others and may these relationships become the hidden foundation and blessing to our children. Amen.
