KEEPING PROMISES (2 CORINTHIANS 1:16-20)
REFLECTION
Keeping promises is the theme of reflection. To keep promises is to fulfil or do what one has said he or she would do. We shall reflect on the fact that God is a promise keeper and hence worth our trust.
Beloved in the Lord, God is worth our trust because He is a promise keeper. Paul underscored this important fact when he wrote to the church of Corinth, “But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas and Timothy —was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:18-20). In other words, we mention the phrase “Amen” at the end of our prayers because we believe God is a promise keeper. It is, for this reason, Jesus said “… I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” (John 14:13-14). It is important to note that the phrase “Whatever you ask in my name” does not refer to anything we mention in our prayer. The “whatever” refers to anything we ask according to the will of God. God keeps promises according to His will for our lives hence we are reminded in 1 John 5:14-15 ” when John wrote, This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. (1 John 5:14-15) It is the will of God to grant us salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour, according to John 3:16-17, therefore “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17). Let us continue to pray for God’s promises or will to manifest in our lives.
In summary, we discovered that God is a promise keeper and is hence worth our trust. Let us believe in His Word, obey Him and prayerfully expect His promises to be fulfilled.
PRAYER
Faithful God, thank you for fulfilling Your promises in our lives. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to remain faithful servants and children even when Your will is done in our lives. Amen.
