HOLY ONE OF GOD (LUKE 4:31-44

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “Holy One of God.” The Holy One of God means a person who has been anointed, chosen, or set apart by God for a purpose. We shall reflect on the fact that unclean spirits acknowledge the supremacy of Jesus Christ.

Beloved in the Lord, while the Jews viewed Jesus as a commoner who had gained knowledge in the Law, however, unclean spirits or demons, acknowledge the supremacy of Jesus as the Holy One of God. We are told by Luke that “Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching because his words had authority. 33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are —the Holy One of God!” 35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. 36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power, he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area. (Luke 4:31-37) Dear friend, Jesus in only Lord over human beings but also Lord over evil and spiritual forces. It is, for this reason, Paul wrote that “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. ” (Philippians 2:9-11). Christ our Lord and Saviour, is the Holy One who has power over unclean spirits, therefore let us put our hope and trust in Him at all times.

Again, after healing Simon’s mother-in-law of high fever in Luke 4:38-39, we are told, “At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.” (Luke 4:40-41). Friend in Christ, “…our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12) It is for this reason we are greatly encouraged to always call on the name of Jesus in every situation for unclean spirits fear and flee at the name of Jesus Christ, the anointed one of God. We are not alone on the battlefield, Jesus our General and his host of angels are always with us. Praise the Lord!

In summary, we have discovered that we are not alone on the battlefield for the unclean spirits that we battle against acknowledge the supremacy of Jesus Christ, the Holy One of God. Let us continue to put our faith in Christ and call on Him at all times for our redemption, healing and salvation.

PRAYER

We thank you Jesus that at the mention of your name unclean spirits are defeated. May the Holy Spirit continue to strengthen our faith to always depend on Jesus, the Holy One of God, in every situation of our lives. Amen.
