REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “The Holiness of God” The holiness of God means God is wholly and infinitely pure, sinless and worthy of praise and worship. We shall reflect on the fact that sinful humanity experiences the holiness of God through His gracious calling.

Beloved in the Lord, we can only experience the holiness of God in our lives through His grace and calling. Isaiah demonstrated to us that we are sinful beings who do not deserve to experience the holiness of God when He exclaimed ““Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” (Isaiah 6:5) However, Isaiah experienced the grace and calling of the Lord upon his life when he said “Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for. ” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? ”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:6-8) Beloved in the Lord, we experience the Holiness of God through His gracious cleansing and calling.

Again Paul also expressed his unworthiness to experience the grace and call of Jesus when he wrote, “For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.” (1 Corinthians 15:9) However, the Lord counted him worthy and Paul wrote, “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect.” (1 Corinthians 15:10). Dear friend, so long as we are ready to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, we shall receive His grace that enables us to experience the holiness and calling of God in our lives. It is never too late for Paul again wrote, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). Like Paul, we have done terrible things in the past and have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23) but “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). It is for this purpose can experience the Holiness of God and also become children of God. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs —heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, (Romans 8:16-17)

In addition to supporting the fact that we can not experience the Holiness of God until we have received His grace and calling through Christ, Simon Peter after he had previously doubted and later witnessed a miracle performed by Jesus “fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.” (Luke 5:8-10) However, Jesus found him and the others worthy of His grace and calling, “Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. (Luke 5:10-11) Beloved in the Lord, there is no reason to doubt the power of Jesus in our lives, Let us continue to trust and obey him so that we shall continue to experience the power and Holiness of God in our lives even as we are called to bring the Good News to the world. Jesus has assured us that “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. (John 12:44-45)

In summary, we have discovered that to experience the glory and holiness of God we must avail ourselves and be ready to graciously receive our calling through our Lord Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to serve the Lord according to our calling so that we may always graciously experience the Holiness of God in our lives. Amen.
