THE SOWER’S PARABLE (LUKE 8:1-21)

REFLECTION

Our theme for our reflection is the sower’s parable. A parable is a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. The Sower’s parable teaches us what should we do with the Good News or the Word of God to be fruit-bearing Christians. It must be noted that how we receive the Good News will determine the value we place on it, what we do with it and its impact fruit-bearing impact on our lives.

Firstly, the Good News must be received like a seed that has been planted in good soil, we must listen to it with a good and noble heart and retain it by persevering and applying it to our lives to yield spiritual and moral fruits, thus “… the seed (Good News) on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. (Luke 8:15)

Secondly, no one can give what he or she does not have, therefore after we have been impacted and have yielded good fruits through listening and persevering in the Good News, we must proceed to bear testimony about the Good News by spreading it to all and sundry. Jesus himself showed us the example by travelling “… about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. (Luke 8:1) Christians of today have no excuse, there are a thousand and one ways of spreading the Gospel (Evangelism). As a believer and a beneficiary of the Good News, how have you impacted the lives of others through social media via the sharing of the Good News? In our interaction with your colleagues and friends, do we make Jesus and our salvation a subject matter worthy of attention and discussion? Our generation is blessed with the power of information technology, transportation, and innovations that make it easier to reach out to lost souls. Let us be the channel through which the Good News will reach others.

God is a gardener who continually sows His transformational and fruit-bearing seed, His Word. Jesus the son of God extended the seed sowing work to believers who have become beneficiaries of the seed (Word of God or the Gospel) that Jesus invested in us. We now must ensure that we work on the grounds along the path, break the rocky ground to make it fertile and then uproot the thorns on the fertile grounds to pave the way for God’s seed to germinate and eventually bear fruits in the lives of our lost brothers and sisters.

Beloved in the Lord, salvation is not a competition of who gets to heaven first. Salvation is by grace and through our faith in God we have been called to become co-gardeners with Jesus Christ. Let us not give up on the seeds which fell on the infertile or wrong grounds. Jesus said “Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. (Luke 8:12-14)

We have the opportunity today to make an impact in the lives of others. We are called into the mission of Jesus Christ to break new grounds and sow the Good News to make us bear fruits worthy of the Kingdom of God. Remember, that we are not just the good soil producing good fruits but we have also become co-gardeners with Jesus Christ. This is the essence of Matthew 24-18-20, “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

In summary, we have discovered that the Sower’s parable teaches us what we should do with the Good News or the Word of God to be fruit-bearing Christians. How we receive the Good News will determine the value we place on it and its fruit-bearing impact on our lives. Shalom.
