TURNING POINT (LUKE 22:39-46)

REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “Turning point” A turning point is a time at which an important change takes place which affects the future of a person or thing. We shall reflect on the following points.

  1. Doing the will of God is the turning point in our lives.
  2. Prayer plays an important role in our turning points.

Dear friend in the Lord, doing the will of God is the turning point in our lives. When Jesus was greatly distressed and confronted with the kind of suffering He was about to experience, He chose to do the will of God. He prayed “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:42) Imagine if Jesus had obeyed His will by seeking His comfort instead of abiding by the will of God to save humanity from sin and condemnation. The result is that we would have perished in our sins and there would be no hope for eternal life. Jesus’ decision to do God’s will and not His will was the turning point that brought salvation and hope to humanity so that the assurance of John 3:16 will be fulfilled in our lives. This assurance is that “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Beloved in the Lord, anytime we do God’s will or are desirous to do God’ will, we experience a great and impactful turning point in our lives. My dear friend in Christ, are you in a dilemma because of your current precarious situation? Are you torn between doing your will or doing God’s will in your marriage, at your workplace and in your business? Are confused about cutting corners to make money or using legitimate means to make money? Is your current hardship or situation pushing you to take matters into your own hands or wait upon the Lord and do His will? Jesus also experienced the dilemma of doing His will against God’s will in a time of agony, frustration and pain but He chose to do God’s will and that was a turning point in His life. He is our great and perfect example, therefore, let us look up to Him when it comes to doing God’s will. The turning point in His life is that “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11) May we also experience a glorious turning point in our lives by doing God’s will.

Secondly, prayer plays an important role in our turning point. We are strengthened through prayer to do God’s will and to experience a glorious turning point in our lives. We are told that after Jesus had prayed to do God’s will and not His will, An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. (Luke 22:43) Would an Angel come from heaven to strengthen him if he had elected to do His will and not God’s will? Dear friend, so long as we are willing to experience a turning point according to the will of God, the Lord will not forsake us. He will grant us strength and enablement through the Holy Spirit. The Lord further assured us in Isaiah 41:10 that “… do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” Beloved in the Lord, what is weighing you down, is it the challenges in your marriage? Are you battling with an addiction? Is the temptation of sexual immorality knocking at your door? Are you contemplating stealing or engaging in corruption at your workplace to make ends meet? Are you contemplating having extramarital relationships as a husband or a wife? Are you contemplating going out with someone’s husband or wife because you have been single for too long? Once the devil begins to knock at your door with evil thoughts, you need to continually pray and remind yourself of the Will of God through the study of Scripture. As we pray and are determined to do His will, God will continually strengthen us to experience a turning point of peace, joy, victory and salvation in our lives .

In summary, we have discovered that doing the will of God is the turning point in our lives, and prayer plays an important role in experiencing this turning point. Shalom.

PRAYER

May the Holy Spirit empower us to always pray and do God’s will so that we may experience God’s glorious turning points in our lives.
