TELL ME ABOUT IT (LUKE 24:17-24)
REFLECTION
“Tell me about it ” is the theme for our reflection. On the day Jesus was resurrected, two of His followers were on the road to Emmaus. Jesus joined them, but they could not recognise Him. It became obvious that some of His followers did not understand Jesus’ absence from the tomb as resurrection.
They thought the body of Jesus was missing and explained to Jesus what had happened, “About Jesus of Nazareth,” … “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” (Luke 24:19-24) In other words, some of the people who followed Jesus had lost hope because they believed that He was a Prophet sent by God and endowed with supernatural powers to redeem Israel from the Roman government thereby granting them total independence. They lost hope when Jesus was persecuted and killed by the leaders of Israel.
Eventually, their hope will be renewed with the understanding that Jesus was not one of God’s prophets but the son of God whom the prophets of old had spoken about. He was to redeem not just Israel but the whole of humanity from sin and Satan’s dominion into the Kingdom of God through faith. It was for this reason, that Jesus said to them “Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”(Luke 24:26). Dear friend in the Lord, the resurrection of Jesus has renewed our hope for salvation and eternal live in Him. Paul further explained the renewal of hope through Jesus’ resurrection when he wrote “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. (1 Corinthians 15:17-21). Surely, in Christ, we live! There are people out there who need to hear about the Resurrection power and our redemptive. Luke the two people on their way to Emmaus, let us talk about Christ to those who are interested in knowing Him so that they may also come to the saving knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
PRAYER
Our Lord and Master Jesus, we are eternally grateful to you for saving us and renewing our hope for the eternal life through Your resurrection power. Amen
