REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “The sign of God’s promise” A promise is a declaration or assurance that one will do something or that a particular thing will happen. God gave circumcision as a sign of His covenant promise to Israel. We shall learn that sin renders the sign of God’s promise ineffectual. God’s promise is fulfilled in our lives if we obey His commandments.
Beloved in the Lord, a generation of Israelites had the sign of God’s promise marked on them through circumcision, yet they could not make it to the promised land because of disobedience. However, another generation obeyed God and made it to the promised land as a result, received the sign of God’s promise through circumcision. All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age —died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt. 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the LORD. For the LORD had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. Joshua 5:4-7. After God had led them through a journey of physical, moral and spiritual reformation to Canaan, He then declared them sanctified. He said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal to this day.” (Joshua 5:9). Similarly, our sign of God’s promise as Christians is the efficacious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, however, it is not enough to profess Jesus as Lord and Saviour but we must constantly obey His teachings so that we do become like the Israelites who were circumcised but because of disobedience they could not make it to the promised land. Jesus’ sacrificial blood that cleanses us from unrighteousness is the sign of God’s promise of salvation are believe in Jesus and also do the will of God. For Jesus admonished us that “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21) Again, in the words of the great commission, Jesus said to the disciples, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19-20) Obedience and God’s covenant promise lead to pleasing God. When God is pleased with us, He fulfils His promises in our lives. Are you pleasing God? Are you living a life worthy of a child of God? Beyond being a member of the church, are you a true disciple of God who has accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour? Are you consistent with the study and obedience to the Word of God?
In summary, we have discovered that it is not enought to have the sign of God’s promise but it more important to have the coexistence of both the sign of God’s promise and obedience to His commandment. God is please with those who have covenant relationship and also do His will.
PRAYER
May the Holy Spirit strengthen us to maintain our covenant relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ even as we remain obedient to His Word. Amen.
