REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “Ageing”. Ageing can be defined as the time-related deterioration of the physiological functions necessary for survival and fertility. We shall reflect on the fact that ageing limits our ability to do much for the Lord; therefore, we must serve the Lord diligently while we are young. Again, as we age, we must help direct and shape the path of the next generation.
Beloved in the Lord, ministry and all successful human activities and projects strive on youthful energy and vigour. Ageing limits or slows down our ability to do much for the Lord. It is for this reason, “When Joshua had grown old, the LORD said to him, ‘You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.” (Joshua 13:1) In other words, God’s mission of capturing the entire promised land through Joshua had been slowed by the ageing of Joshua. Ageing is bound to occur as long as we are alive. However, ageing is a period of rest, mentorship and transmission of knowledge and wisdom to the next generation. As we age, we grow weary and may not be able to do the very activities we did effortlessly when we were young. It is for this reason we have been greatly admonished, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, “I find no pleasure in them” (Ecclesiastes 12:1) If you are youth or if you have the strength and vigour today then give your best to the Lord without excuses before the years of ageing come. We should feel proud and fulfilled in our old age because we diligently served the Lord when we were young.
Beloved in the Lord, ageing means we must help shape the future and destiny of the current generation and posterity. God used Joshua at His old age to provide an inheritance for the tribes of Israel. God instructed Joshua in his old age, “Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you” (Joshua 13:6). As we grow old, we must spend our time and effort helping the next generation to settle well. We must guide and direct the generation concerning the will and purpose of God.
In summary, we have discovered that ageing limits our ability to do much for the Lord. Therefore, we must serve the Lord diligently while we are young. Again, as we age, we must help direct and shape the path of the next generation.
PRAYER
May the Holy Spirit empower us to age gracefully to fulfil our calling according to God’s plans and purpose for our lives. Amen.
