REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “Covenant and Consequences” A covenant is an agreement or promise, usually formal, between two or more people or groups to do or not do something specified. A covenant between God and Israel is God’s promise to protect and be with Israel always and Israel’s obligation in the covenant is to obey His commandment. Consequences are the results or effects of a person’s action or event which are typically unwelcome or unpleasant. We shall reflect on the fact that God is always faithful to us in His covenant, however, the consequences of disobedience are suffering and falling away.
Beloved in the Lord, God has a covenant relationship with those who have faith in Him and are ready to obey His commandments. Just as God is faithful in fulfilling His promises, we must also be faithful in our obedience to Him lest we suffer the consequences of our disobedience. It is for this reason, during the last days of Joshua among the Israelites, he admonished them “Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. 15 But just as all the good things the LORD your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened until the LORD your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you. 16 If you violate the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the LORD’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you. ” (Joshua 23:14-16). Dear friend in Christ, we also have a covenant with God through Jesus Christ. John 3:16-17 represents the New Covenant God made with humanity, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17) However sin or disobedience without repentance and faith will lead to judgement and eternal consequences, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Obedience is not only obligation in our covenant with God but it an act of faith or believing in God. “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6). Our obligation in the covenant God has with us is to trust and obey Him in every aspect of our lives and we shall continue to experience His glory and eternal promise of salvation in our lives.
In summary, we have discovered that God is always faithful to us in His covenant, however, the consequences of disobedience are suffering and falling away from His covenant promises.
PRAYER
Covenant-keeping God, we offer our lives to You as a living sacrifice, may we continue to be beneficiaries of Your Covenant with you through obedience.
