REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “We are on a journey.” To be on a journey means going through the process of spiritual growth or formation. We shall reflect on the fact that we are bound to encounter faith-testing challenges on our journey of spiritual growth; however, with Jesus at our side, we shall overcome.

Beloved in the Lord, life is a journey of discovering our faith-testing challenges, and weaknesses even as we rely on Jesus for guidance, instruction and empowerment through the Holy Spirit. Earlier in Luke 9:1-2, we are told “When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. (Luke 9:1-2) It was for this a man with a demon-possessed son brought his son to be delivered by the disciples. We are told “A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.” (Luke 9:38-40) Why did the disciples fail to heal or deliver the boy? Did they become complacent in faith and hence fail to exercise the authority given to them to heal? Jesus said to the disciples “You unbelieving and perverse generation,” …“how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” (Luke 9:41). It means that although they had been given the authority to heal and drive out evil spirits they still had doubts in their minds hence Jesus described them as unbelieving and perverse. In other words, their faith became deficient, weak and inconsistent as a result they could not produce the desired result.

Dear friend in Christ, in our spiritual journey and growth, we must completely trust Jesus and remain consistent in our faith. We must have zero tolerance for spiritual complacency and doubts in our lives. Irrespective of our challenges, we must always believe that we are not alone on life’s journey. We are greatly encouraged by the Prophet Jerimiah when he said “…blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. 8 They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:7-8) Jesus has assured us that “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26). Let us journey with Christ and we shall have the strength and power to through faith to overcome our crises.

In summary, we have discovered that we are bound to encounter faith-testing challenges on our journey of spiritual growth however with Jesus at our side, our faith will be strengthened and we shall overcome.

PRAYER
May the Holy Spirit cure us of doubt and inconsistency and may our faith produce impactful results through our Lord and Master Jesus. Amen.
