REFLECTION
“God’s everlasting love” is the theme for our reflection. God’s everlasting love is His enduring and unconditional affection for those in a covenant relationship with Him. We shall reflect on the fact that God’s everlasting love is available to those who have a covenant relationship with Him.
Beloved in the Lord, when we go astray like lost sheep and we find ourselves in the wilderness of sin and captivity, the Lord remembers His covenant with us and demonstrates His everlasting love through His act of salvation or redemption in our lives. It was for this purpose, the Lord reassured the Israelites who were in exile that their situation would change from that of a barren woman to a woman who will give birth to her children, (Isaiah 58:1-3) Like a young widow who has endured shame and hardship, Israel will be remarried by God and her shame, disgrace, humiliation and reproach take away by God who will Israel’s redeemer. (Isaiah 58:4-5) Again, we see God’s everlasting love manifested like a loving husband who reconciles with his deserted and rejected wife after having been angry with her in the past. (Isaiah 58:6-8) We see God using different imageries or scenarios to express His everlasting love and covenant relationship with Israel. It shows us how God values His people and does not abandon them in their affliction or leave them to perish in the hands of their enemies. He remembers and redeems His own. Irrespective of how long it may take, we are never forgotten, It is for this reason, He said emphatically said to Israel in the book of Jeremiah “This is what the LORD says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfil my good promise to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:10-11)
Dear friend in Christ, we find the ultimate expression of God’s everlasting love in Jesus Christ. Beyond the covenant promises God made to Israel, God’s everlasting love covers all who are saved in Jesus Christ. We the new Israel made up of people of all nations. We see God’s everlasting love for the world in John 3:16-17, ” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” Jesus further commands us through the Great Commission to preach the everlasting love of God to the world so that many will be saved. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20) All who repent and believe shall enter the everlasting covenant relationship with God and shall experience His everlasting love.
In summary, we have discovered that God’s everlasting love is available to those who have a covenant relationship with Him. We have also been saved and commissioned into the world to preach the everlasting love of God through Jesus to all who are willing to repent and believe in Him as Lord and Saviour.
