SUNDAY REFLECTION

The theme for this Sunday’s reflection is be faithful to your calling. To be faithful means to remain loyal and steadfast. A calling means is becoming a disciple or a servant of the Lord. In today’s reflection we shall discuss the following points:

  1. The reason for which you must be faithful to your calling.
  2. The two types of calling to which you must be faithful.
  3. Reward for being faithful to your calling.

Firstly, the reason for which you must be faithful to your calling is that, you were once lost in the wilderness of sin but Jesus saved you. Paul succinctly put it this way in the second Scripture reading, ” For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,” (Colossians 1:19-22). Dear friend, if you have no reason to be faithful in your calling as a Christian then remember that “…God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” (Romans 5:8-10). You were once a prodigal son or daughter but have been saved. Be faithful to your calling because you are a product of grace and God’s unconditional love.

Secondly, there are two types of calling. These are a calling to your salvation and a calling to serve. You cannot be called to serve unless you have received a calling to be saved first. In the third Scripture reading (Luke 10:38-42), Martha responded to a call which most people will consider very essential in this world but Jesus would teach her to prioritize the calling to be saved over all other worldly callings or vocation. “Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:40-42). In other words, Mary chose to be faithful to her calling to be saved by receiving the precious teachings of Jesus that will prepare her for eternal life. Beloved in the Lord, do you prioritize your calling to be saved over all other worldly callings? Your love for God’s word or the Gospel will determine how faithful you are to your salvation and service to Him. Again, the second calling after your calling to be saved is the calling to serve the Lord at all time as a faithful steward with all your resources. Abraham understood his calling as a servant and for this reason, when he saw the Angels pass by his tent, he welcome them saying “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.” And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them.” (Genesis 18: 3-8). Abraham served the Lord faithfully with his time and resources. Are we doing same in our generation faithfully? To be faithful to your calling means serving God with all your life, with what you have and in every way you can as a steward or servant.

Thirdly, the reward for being faithful to your calling is that God takes care of your needs. Abraham, received the definite promise of a son when he served the Lord by rendering his service to the Angels. “They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” The LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” (Genesis 18:9-10). Again Jesus is able to reward you when you are faithful to your calling because “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.” Colossians 1:15-16). Dear friend in the Lord, continue to be faithful in your calling regardless of the challenges that you are encountering in your service to God or may experience as a result of dedicating your life to the service of God. Just as Paul was told, the Lord will provide your needs for He says “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

In summary beloved in the Lord, You must be faithful to your calling because Jesus first loved you and saved you. The Lord has invited you into two inseparable callings and these are, a calling to your own salvation and a calling to serve Him faithfully. The Lord continues to be gracious and takes care of our needs when we remain faithful to our calling. May the Holy Spirit empower us to remain faithful in our calling regardless of the challenges. Amen.
