REFLECTION

Love one another as brothers and sisters is the theme for our reflection. The writer of Hebrews admonished his audience to “Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” (Hebrews 13:1-2). In other words, by loving strangers, the Lord may send angels or helpers our way. An example is Abraham in Genesis 18:1-15

It is essential to recognise that according to our Christian teachings, a brother and sister transcends biological siblings. Your neighbour, whether an acquaintance or a stranger, is a brother or sister who must be loved unconditionally in Christ. It is important to note that loving others is a sure way of pleasing, hence the writer of Hebrews wrote, “…do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” (Hebrews 13:16) In other words, if we want to please God then let us be endlessly kind to others even when they are not always kind to us. Jesus admonished His disciples that “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35). Ethnic and racial conflicts or wars would cease or decrease tremendously only if we love one another as brothers and sisters in the world. We pray for God to intervene in the Russian-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine wars and all other civil and ethnic conflicts in Africa and other places in the world so that we shall all live brothers and sisters regardless of our political affiliations, religious, racial and tribal identities or differences. Shalom.

PRAYER

Holy Spirit, strengthen us to accept, cherish and love one another as brothers and sisters regardless of our differences. Amen.
