REFLECTION
God’s chosen One is the theme for our reflection. “God’s chosen One” means to be divinely selected, called, appointed, consecrated for God’s mission. We shall reflect on the fact that Jesus is God’s chosen One whose mission is to save the world from sin and eternal destruction.
Beloved in the Lord, before the coming of Jesus, animals such as bulls, sheep and goats were used for the atonement and propitiation of sin. “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22) Atonement with animal sacrifice became a cyclical event and had lost its importance or value in the religious life of the Israelites. It is for this reason, God chose His only Son as the ultimate and everlasting sacrifice for the atonement, forgiveness and salvation of the world. When John the Baptist saw Jesus, he testified, ““Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!..Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” (John 1:29,32-34). Before John the Baptist’s testimony, an Angel had long ago told Joseph in a dream that Mary “… will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21). In Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus, the Angel told Mary that she was going to be the mother of God’s chosen One when he said, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” (Luke 1:30-33)
Dear friend, how do we have a relationship with God’s chosen One in order to be saved? Jesus, God’s chosen one assures us that “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17) In other words, all that is required of us is to repent and believe in Him as our Lord and Saviour. No other sacrifice is required from us! Nothing or no one in this world can grant us salvation except Jesus, the chosen of One of God. When we have repented and believed in God’s chosen One, Paul further admonishes us in Romans 12:1-2, “… in view of God’s mercy (through His chosen One), to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Dear friend, we are being called upon to put our faith in Him even as we continue to obey His teachings and examples to please God. No longer are we required to make any sacrifice because Jesus the chosen one of God came into the world and made the ultimate sacrifice to save all those who are willing to repent and believe in Him. May we continue to walk with Him in faith and in total obedience to His Word.
In summary, we have reflected on the theme “God’s chosen One. We have reminded ourselves that Jesus is God’s chosen One whose mission is to save the world from sin and eternal destruction. Let us continue to believe in Him and follow His teachings and examples in pleasing God until His second coming.
PRAYER
Thank you Lord for fulfilling Your promise and saving us through Jesus Christ, the chosen One. Amen.
