REFLECTION

“Whose Son is the Christ?” is the theme for our reflection. Jesus seized the opportunity to teach his audience about the humanity and divinity of the Messiah.

Beloved in the Lord, it was common knowledge that Jesus is the son of David or a descendant of David; however, for the Sadducees, if there is no resurrection, then how can a human being become divine? Again, although the Pharisees believed in the resurrection of the dead, they could not accept the divinity of Jesus Christ. It was for this reason, “… Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David? 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand 43 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’ 44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?” (Luke 20:41-44) In other words, Jesus is not only a human descendant of King David but also divine because King David acknowledged the divinity of Jesus Christ as Lord and one who is eternal and reigns with God. This prophetic declaration materialised when the Angel Gabriel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:35) Beloved in the Lord, we serve the Lord who is human and understands our sufferings and challenges because he is the son of David. Again, we worship the divine Lord, who has the power to save us and grant us access to eternal life because He is the Son of God. Just as David called Jesus His Lord, our greatest joy of having Jesus as our Lord and saviour is expressed in Paul’s letter to the Romans, when he wrote, “Now if we are children, then we are heirs —heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. (Romans 8:17)

In summary, we have learnt that Jesus was mortal or human because he descended from the lineage of David. However, He is also divine because He is the Son of God. He understands our human challenges and needs and has the power to save us because He is divine. Shalom.

PRAYER

May the Holy Spirit grant us deep insight into the mysteries of God. May our study of Scripture and the revelation give us an increase in our faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
