REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “Delight in God’s Law that is more valuable than Gold. Gold represents wealth, and God’s law represents life. The theme requires us to find true joy, pleasure, and satisfaction in God’s Law because it is more valuable than gold.

Beloved in the Lord, gold or wealth alone cannot give joy. Many individuals possess enormous wealth, yet a void remains in their lives. This void springs from a broken relationship with God or disconnection from God. Again, many are also wealthy, yet the source of their delight and satisfaction is not their wealth but their relationship with God. Daily dependence on God through obedience to His commandments gives believers a daily dose of delight that is more valuable than the value of gold. It is for this reason that the Psalmist confessed, “Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. 130 The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. 131 I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands….Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. ” (Psalms 119:129-131,133)  In other words, we see the strong desire or appetite the Psalmist has for the Word of God because it places him in a right relationship with God. When we are in the right relationship with God, we experience true joy, pleasure, and satisfaction that wealth and pleasure never give us. Many have all the gold and silver in the world, yet they lack the inner joy, pleasure, peace and satisfaction because they are so poor that all that they have is wealth that is fleeting or ephemeral. We are greatly emboldened to pursue God’s law, which is eternal and more valuable than gold. Beloved in the Lord, let’s work hard to create wealth, pleasure and happiness; however, let’s heed Solomon’s admonishment when he said “…here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14)

In summary, we have discovered that gold or wealth is valuable and it gives temporary joy to the one who owns it. Many are wealthy but still looking for spiritual fulfilment. We are admonished to find true spiritual and eternal fulfilment that surpasses the value of gold. Let us yearn to please God and not gold through the obedience of His Word so that we shall continue to experience eternal joy, pleasure, peace and satisfaction. Shalom.

PRAYER

May the Holy Spirit empower us to know and obey God’s Word so that we shall continue to experience true peace, joy, pleasure and satisfaction. Amen.
