REFLECTION
“Blessed is the fruit of your womb” serves as the profound theme for our reflection today. To be “blessed” is to be divinely favoured, hallowed, and consecrated for a holy purpose. The “fruit of the womb” refers to the miraculous life developing within a mother. Therefore, we might rephrase this theme as: “Consecrated and holy is the child within your womb.” Mary received this joyous affirmation from Elizabeth in Luke 1:42. Our reflection explores why this particular fruit of the womb is uniquely blessed and what that means for us today.
Firstly, this fruit of the womb is blessed because through Him, God’s ancient promise of salvation is finally realised. Although Jesus, the fruit of Mary’s womb, emerged from Bethlehem—one of the smallest and seemingly most insignificant clans in Israel—His destiny was cosmic in scale. As the prophet Micah foretold: “He shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth” (Micah 5:4). Micah was not a solitary voice; he joined a chorus of prophets, including Isaiah, who kindled Israel’s yearning for the Messiah. This long-awaited Advent reached a crescendo in a humble Judean home: “When Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! … For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord” (Luke 1:41-42, 45). My dear friend, the Lord who promises is the Lord who performs. Through the blessed fruit of Mary’s womb, we are no longer spectators of a promise, but partakers of salvation through Jesus our Messiah.
Secondly, the fruit of Mary’s womb is blessed because He brings glad tidings to the humble, the lowly, and the overlooked. This is the very heartbeat of Christmas! Through the conception of Jesus, God chose to exalt a humble maiden, demonstrating that His kingdom belongs to the poor in spirit. Mary sang, “he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on, all generations will call me blessed, 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. (Luke 1:48-51). My dear friend, anyone who enters into a relationship with Christ is touched by this same divine favour. You are exalted by His love, and His mercy rests upon you. Truly, the blessed fruit of Mary’s womb is the greatest news ever delivered to humanity; without Him, Christmas is merely a season, but with Him, it is a transformation, blessing and exaltation of the humble.
Thirdly, through the coming of this blessed fruit, our salvation is made complete. Our redemption is not bought with the blood of endless burnt offerings, but through a perfect, singular act of obedience. As the scripture declares, “He [Jesus] does away with the first in order to establish the second. And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Hebrews 10:9-10). Beloved in the Lord, because of the blessed fruit of Mary’s womb, we have been sanctified to find eternal favour with God. No amount of human effort or “works” can bridge the gap to the Divine; we are saved purely by grace through faith in Christ. Let us use this Advent season and the Christmas celebration to herald this glorious truth to a world in need of hope.
In conclusion, the fruit of Mary’s womb is blessed because He is the fulfilment of God’s covenant, the bringer of grace to the lowly, and the ultimate sacrifice who sanctifies us “once for all.” He gives us the only true reason to celebrate. May the Holy Spirit empower us to live lives of holiness and gratitude, as those redeemed by Christ, the blessed fruit of Mary’s womb. Shalom.
A Prayer for the Season
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son, the blessed fruit of Mary’s womb. We marvel at Your faithfulness in fulfilling Your promises and Your mercy in lifting up the lowly. Cleanse our hearts this season, that we may be living sanctuaries of Your Spirit. Grant us the courage to share the good news of Jesus Christ with all the world, and may we ever walk in the light of His sanctifying grace. In the holy name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
