REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “Walking humbly with God’s righteousness and Wisdom.” To walk humbly with God is not a passive act; it is a deliberate choice to submit our ego, our plans, and our pride to His supreme Lordship. It requires us to admit that we are not the masters of our own fate.
God’s righteousness is far more than just “following rules”—it is the very essence of His character, defined by perfect justice, boundless mercy, and sacrificial love. Similarly, God’s wisdom is not found in books or clever speeches. It is “divine insight that is begotten through obedience and the fear of God, enabling believers to understand life, decisions, and truth from His perspective rather than the world’s.” To walk in this theme is to align our hearts with His, ensuring that our footsteps are guided by His truth rather than our own selfish desires.
In this reflection, we shall be persuaded by two vital lessons:
- God desires our humble character more than our religious rituals.
- Jesus Christ is the only true source and embodiment of this righteousness and wisdom.
1. God Desires a Humble Heart Over Religious Display
We must understand that God is not impressed by outward shows of piety if our hearts remain stubborn and proud. In Micah 6:1-8, we see a powerful courtroom scene. God has a “lawsuit” against His people, reminding them how He rescued them from slavery. The people try to bargain with God, asking if He wants expensive sacrifices or thousands of offerings.
However, God rejects the idea that we can “buy” His favour with rituals. The Prophet Micah asks: “Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” (Micah 6:7) The answer is a resounding “No.” God wants your heart, not your things. The scripture concludes with a clear command: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8) If we want to please God, we must stop hiding behind religious traditions and start living out His righteousness through acts of kindness and a humble spirit. Jesus reinforces this in the Beatitudes, promising that those who seek this path will find true satisfaction: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” (Matthew 5:6-7)
2. Jesus: The Embodiment of God’s Righteousness and Wisdom
The world often views humility as weakness and God’s ways as “foolish.” Yet, we are called to reject the world’s logic and embrace Christ. We cannot achieve righteousness on our own; we must receive it through Jesus.
Paul explains that God deliberately uses what the world mocks to show His power: “…God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” (1 Corinthians 1:27-30)
Jesus is our Wisdom because He is the only one who truly reveals the Father to us. He declares, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) If you want to know how to walk wisely, you must “Listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5). Again, as our righteousness, His entire life is our perfect example of justice, mercy and love. Because we are determined to walk humbly in His righteousness and wisdom, we follow his instructions when he said in Matthew 28:20, “… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Conclusion and Call to Action
In summary, walking humbly with God is the only path to a life of purpose and peace. We have seen that God values your humble obedience over empty rituals and that Jesus Christ is the perfect map for this journey.
Examine your life honestly. Are you relying on your own “wisdom” or are you submitting to God? This week, choose one area of your life where you have been proud or self-reliant, and consciously surrender it to the Lord. Start acting justly in your workplace, showing mercy in your home, and walking humbly in your prayer life.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Word. We confess that we often try to walk in our own strength and wisdom. Please forgive our pride. Grant us the grace to walk humbly before You, to love mercy, and to act justly in all we do. Transform us into the image of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who is our true wisdom and righteousness. Help us to be His faithful disciples in all we say and do. Amen.
