REFLECTION
YEARN FOR THE FOOD THAT ENDURES (JOHN 6:25-35)
Physical hunger is momentarily satisfied with food, yet food cannot keep the body sated forever. Humanity is bound to a cycle of searching and consuming until their final rest. However, this is not the case with spiritual nourishment. Once spiritual food is received, it endures eternally. This is why our theme today encourages us to “yearn for the food that endures.” We shall reflect on the truth that we must hunger for Christ—the only sustenance that lasts—so that we may overcome the fleeting temptations of things that perish.
The Bread of Life
Beloved in the Lord, God has provided the very nourishment we ought to yearn for, making Him visible and accessible to us all. When the crowds were searching for the identity of the bread of life, Jesus proclaimed to them:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 6:32-35)
God bestowed this Bread of Life specifically for our salvation, for as the Scripture declares:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
My dear friend, if you desire to live a life that is truly acceptable and pleasing to God, you must accept and yearn for Jesus Christ, the food that endures. In Him alone lies our salvation and the promise of eternal life. The shadows of this world—wealth, status, and earthly pleasures—can never provide soul-deep satisfaction. Yet, with Christ in our lives, we are transformed into children of God, and His grace becomes ever sufficient for both our physical and spiritual sustenance. Do not settle for the crumbs of the world when the Banquet of Heaven is laid before you.
Summary and Call to Action
In summary, we have been reminded to yearn for Christ, the only food that endures, so that we may overcome the temptation to chase after that which fades away.
Call to Action: This week, I challenge you to audit your spiritual appetite. Intentionally set aside time for prayer and the study of the Word before seeking worldly comforts. Let us stop labouring for that which spoils and instead commit our lives fully to the One who sustains us eternally.
