REFLECTION

“Jesus the Living Water” is the heart of our reflection today. While physical water is a clear liquid that sustains our bodies, “Living Water” is the powerful metaphor for Jesus Christ himself—the sole giver of eternal life. To say Jesus is the Living Water means that through Him, and Him alone, we receive the gift of eternity.

In this reflection, we must answer two urgent questions: How do we drink from Jesus the Living Water, and what must we do once we have been refreshed? Furthermore, what is the significance of this water, and who is invited to drink?

How to Drink from the Living Water

To drink the water Jesus offers, you must first be ready for a life-changing encounter. The Samaritan woman could have ignored Him, asking, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (John 4:9). Instead, she stayed. She was ready to engage. This readiness is your first step.

Secondly, you must listen. You cannot have a fruitful encounter with Christ if you are not prepared to hear His Word. As John 8:31-32 tells us, “Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” When you listen to Jesus, He sets you free from spiritual ignorance.

Thirdly, this encounter reveals your true nature. Jesus exposes our thirst and our sins, calling us to repentance. The woman realised this when she told others, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” (John 4:29). Once we hear Him and see ourselves clearly, we must believe. The Samaritans reached this peak of faith, saying, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Saviour of the world.” (John 4:42).

Our Response and the Significance

What must you do after you have tasted this Living Water? You must witness! When you truly believe in Jesus, you cannot keep it to yourself. The Samaritan woman abandoned her jar and ran to tell her people. “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony” (John 4:39). Are you sharing your testimony? This Lent is your opportunity to tell the world about the everlasting life Jesus gives.

The significance of Jesus as the Living Water is that He brings peace that the world cannot offer. When we have Him, we no longer need to grumble during times of scarcity. Unlike the Israelites, who tested God by demanding, “Give us water to drink” (Exodus 17:2), we are called to have faith in Jesus, who provides with the living water that gives life and peace and satisfies eternally. Truly, Jesus not only quenches our spiritual thirst; He also provides for our physical needs—food, shelter, and clothing—according to His will. As Paul writes, “since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ… And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1-2).

Who is the Water For?

This water is for everyone—especially the sinner. Paul reminds us of God’s incredible grace: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). No matter your past, Jesus invites you to drink the living water that He gives and be saved.

SUMMARY

We have seen that to drink from Jesus the Living Water, you must encounter Him, listen to Him, repent, and believe. Once you are filled, you must go and witness. In Him, we find peace, hope, and the promise of eternal life.

CALL TO ACTION

Do not let your soul remain parched. This week, commit to spending fifteen minutes each day in silent prayer or scripture reading. Identify one person in your life who is “thirsty” for hope and share with them what Jesus has done for you.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, You are the Living Water. Forgive us for trying to quench our thirst with the things of this world. Fill us afresh with Your Spirit, grant us the peace that surpasses understanding, and give us the courage to witness Your truth to the ends of the earth. Amen.
