REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “Anointed to Walk in the Light.” To be “anointed” means to be set apart, empowered, or chosen by God for a specific purpose through His Holy Spirit. To “walk in the light” means to live a life characterised by truth, holiness, and spiritual clarity, guided by God’s presence. The key lesson in our Scriptures is that true sight and purpose do not come from human effort or outward appearance, but from a spiritual transformation that enables us to see and act according to God’s will.

The background of our texts shows a transition from darkness to light. In 1 Samuel 16, Israel transitions from the failed leadership of Saul to the chosen heart of David. In Ephesians 5, Paul describes the transition from a life of sin to a life of righteousness. Finally, in John 9, Jesus moves a man from physical and spiritual blindness into the marvellous light of faith.

1. Discerning God’s Heart Over Outward Appearance

The first lesson of being anointed to walk in the light is that we must learn to see as God sees. Human beings are often blinded by what is visible to the physical eye, such as status, height, or beauty. When Samuel went to anoint a king, he almost chose the wrong man because he relied on his own sight.

“When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD.’ But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.’” (1 Samuel 16:6-7)

To walk in the light, we must ask the Holy Spirit to help us see the hearts of people and the truth of situations. For example, in our workplaces or churches, we might overlook someone humble like David because they do not seem “important.” However, an anointed person discerns that God often chooses the “youngest” or the “least” to do His greatest work.

2. Living as Children of Light

Being anointed to walk in the light requires a complete change in how we behave. It is not enough to simply “see” the light; we must live in a way that reflects it. Paul explains that our lives should produce “fruit” that proves we are no longer in the dark.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:8-10)

Practical Christianity involves making daily choices that please God. If we are anointed, we cannot participate in “shady” deals, gossip, or dishonesty. Instead, we are called to “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11) Walking in the light means our private lives and our public lives are the same because the light of Christ shines through both.

3. Witnessing Through Spiritual Sight

Finally, being anointed to walk in the light means we have a testimony to share. In John 9, Jesus heals a man born blind. This miracle was not just about physical eyes; it was about the man recognising Jesus as the Son of God while the “learned” Pharisees remained in spiritual darkness.

When the Pharisees questioned the man, he stood his ground because the light of truth was in him. He told them, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.” (John 9:30-31) Like this man, we are called to tell the world what Jesus has done for us. We may not have all the theological answers, but we can say, “I once was blind, but now I see.” Jesus warns that those who think they already know everything are often the ones who are most blind: “Jesus said, ‘If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.’” (John 9:41)

Conclusion

In summary, being “Anointed to Walk in the Light” means moving beyond physical sight to spiritual discernment. It involves seeing people through God’s eyes, living a life of goodness and truth that pleases the Lord, and boldly testifying to the power of Jesus Christ.

Call to Action:

This week, I invite you to examine your “walk.” Are there areas of your life still hidden in the shadows? Decide today to turn away from the “fruitless deeds of darkness.” Spend time in prayer and the Word, asking the Holy Spirit to anoint your eyes so that you can discern God’s will in every decision you make.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us out of darkness into Your wonderful light. Anoint our eyes to see as You see and our hearts to love as You love. Help us to live as children of light, bringing glory to Your name in everything we do. Open the eyes of those who are still wandering in the dark, that they may find the light of life in Jesus Christ. Amen.
