REFLECTION

The theme of our reflection is “Night Watch,” based on the passage in Matthew 26:36-46. In this context, a “night” represents a time of darkness, sorrow, or a difficult spiritual season. To “watch” means to stay awake, to be alert, and to guard one’s heart through prayer. The key lesson in this Scripture is that spiritual alertness is the only way to overcome the weakness of human nature during times of testing. This passage takes place in the Garden of Gethsemane, just hours before Jesus was arrested. He was feeling deep sorrow and asked His closest friends to stay awake and support Him in prayer.

The Struggle of the Spirit and the Flesh

One of the most important lessons from this “Night Watch” is the reality of human weakness. Jesus told His disciples, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). Even though the disciples loved Jesus and wanted to support Him, their bodies were tired, and they fell asleep.

In our daily lives, we often face similar struggles. We may intend to spend time with God or do what is right, but the “flesh”—our physical tiredness or worldly distractions—gets in the way. For example, when we are going through a “night” of financial worry or health issues, we might feel too exhausted to pray. However, the Scripture warns us that if we do not “watch,” we are at risk of falling into the temptation of despair or bitterness. We must recognise that our own strength is not enough; we need the power of the Holy Spirit to keep us awake.

Submission to God’s Will

During His night watch, Jesus showed us the perfect example of how to pray. He was in such agony that He asked, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39). A true night watch is not just about asking God for what we want; it is about surrendering our desires to His perfect plan.

Jesus prayed this same prayer three times. This shows us that persistence in prayer is vital. When we face trials, we should be honest with God about our pain, but we must always end with “Your will be done.” As it says in the Lord’s Prayer, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). By watching in prayer, we align our hearts with God, which gives us the strength to face whatever the next morning brings.

The Cost of Sleeping

Jesus returned to His disciples and asked a piercing question: “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). Their failure to stay awake meant they were unprepared for the crisis that followed. When the soldiers arrived, the disciples fled in fear.

If we “sleep” spiritually by ignoring our relationship with God, we will find ourselves overwhelmed when trouble strikes. Staying alert means being consistent in our faith. We are encouraged in other parts of Scripture to “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). The night watch is our protection against the enemy’s attacks.

Conclusion

In summary, the “Night Watch” at Gethsemane teaches us that while our human nature is weak, prayer provides the strength we need to overcome temptation. It shows us that true prayer is a journey of surrendering our will to God’s will.

I urge you today: do not let your soul fall asleep. Whether you are in a season of joy or a season of darkness, make it a priority to “watch and pray.” Set aside time to be alert in the presence of God. Do not wait for a crisis to start your watch; begin now, so that you will be ready for whatever comes.

Prayer

“Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Jesus in the garden. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my flesh to be weak and my spirit to fall asleep. Please give me the strength to stay alert and the heart to always seek Your will above my own. Help me to watch and pray daily, so that I may not fall into temptation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
