REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “A warning against refusing God” A warning is something which is said or written to tell people of a possible danger, problem, or other unpleasant thing that might happen. A warning against refusing God means that if we reject the salvation that God gives to us through Jesus Christ, we shall be destroyed. We shall reflect on the fact that we must heed the warning message while we still have the grace to be saved.

Beloved in the Lord, a warning sign precedes a disaster or an unpleasant happening ahead or in the future. The writer of Hebrews reminded his Jewish audience of the past events that their forefathers experienced at Mount Sinai in fear. “The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.” (Hebrews 12:21). God, through Jesus, has graciously come to humanity to offer them the eternal opportunity to be saved and partake in the joy of Mount Zion. “But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abe” (Hebrews 12:22-24). Beloved, this great redemptive act of God to ensure that as many as believe in Jesus will be saved, thus, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” (John 3:16-17)

Friends, after God had granted us the grace and the way to salvation, do we have any excuse not to be saved? The writer of Hebrews now warns us of the danger of refusing the salvation of God. “See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken —that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:25-29) In other words, if those who disobeyed Moses perished, how much more those who disobey God, who speaks to us from Heaven. God has ultimately revealed Himself through Jesus Christ and continues to speak to us through our preachers and Bible Study meetings. What excuse do we have for disobeying God? What excuse will you give God on the judgment day if you failed to listen to Him while you were on earth? We are further warned in John 3:18 that “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” The choice is yours today, to believe and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour or refuse God’s offer of Salvation and be thrown into Hell. Beloved in the Lord, “Today, if only you would hear his voice, 8 “Do not harden your hearts…” (Psalms 95:7-8)

In summary, we have discovered that although we have the will to make a choice, we have been warned not to refuse God, for the consequences of refusing God or rejecting His salvation are eternal destruction or death. May we be guided by the Holy Spirit to make the right choice and remain faithful to God.

PRAYER

May the Holy Spirit guide our thoughts and actions to always listen to God for our salvation. Amen.
