REFLECTION
“Imitating Christ’s Humility” is the theme for our reflection. To imitate means to copy someone’s speech or behaviour, or to copy something as a model. Christ’s humility is serving God and humanity, doing the will of God rather than one’s will and considering others more important than oneself. The theme is a call to copy or follow the exact example of Christ’s humility. We shall reflect on the fact that to fulfil our true calling as disciples of Jesus Christ, we must also possess His humility, even as we engage the world to win souls for the kingdom of God.
Beloved in the Lord, we live in a world of individualism and self-importance; hence, for us to fulfil our true calling as disciples of Christ, we must imitate His humility. It is for this reason Paul admonished the Christians in Philippi, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4) In John 13:1-17, we see Jesus as a perfect example of humility and service to humanity. However, Peter failed to understand the lesson Jesus was teaching them. Jesus was teaching them to serve in humility in their mission as future Apostles when He washed their feet. Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” (John 13:8). In other words, if you are not ready to humble yourself like me and to serve others on my behalf, then you have no share with me. “You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them” (John 13:13-17). One of the hallmarks of a believer is Christ’s humility. We must emulate Christ’s humility as Christian leaders, spouses, and superiors in our various workplaces. It is only by imitating Christ’s perfect examples that we can become salt and light of the world. Let us also learn from John the Baptist’s example of humility when he acknowledged the Lordship of Christ in the following words, “He must become greater; I must become less.” (John 3:30) When we are filled with Christ’s humility, our lives will be pleasing to God.
In summary, we have discovered that to become true disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, we must follow or imitate His perfect example of humility. We live a meaningful life when we humbly serve God and humanity. Shalom.
PRAYER
May the Holy Spirit empower us to be imitators of Christ’s example of humility so that our lives will always be pleasing to God. Amen.
