“Peace through the Spirit’s presence” is the theme for our reflection. “Peace through the Spirit’s presence” means that a deep, internal sense of tranquillity and wholeness comes from the Holy Spirit’s indwelling. This peace is not dependent on external circumstances, but provides a confident assurance that surpasses human understanding, and it helps believers endure hardship, resolve conflict, and live a life free from fear.

Romans 8:5-11 contrasts those who are “in the flesh” with those who are “in the Spirit,” explaining that a life lived according to the sinful nature leads to death, while a life lived according to the Spirit leads to life and peace. The passage states that the sinful nature is hostile to God and cannot please Him, whereas those who have the Spirit of God living in them belong to Christ. Ultimately, this indwelling Spirit promises to give life to the mortal body, just as God raised Jesus from the dead. Beloved in the Lord, if we refuse to repent and reject Jesus’ salvation, we shall lack peace and the indwelling of the Spirit and be destined for the second death or eternal destruction. Paul admonishes us that “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:5-6). Beloved in the Lord, are you being led by the fleshly desires of the world or the Spirit of Christ? What governs your mind? Is it your flesh, sinful desires or the Holy Spirit? To obey the law and become righteous, we need to follow Jesus’ teachings and examples and be empowered by the Holy Spirit. It is only through this that we can experience true peace. It is for this reason that Jesus assured us that “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:23-26). Let’s yearn for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit by totally submitting to Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, so that we shall experience peace that surpasses all understanding and sustains us even in times of challenges.

In summary, we have discovered that desires of the flesh cannot guarantee true peace, but we experience true peace through the presence or the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Shalom.

PRAYER

May the Holy Spirit continue to dwell in us, guide us and grant us the peace that the world and our fleshly desires cannot give us. Amen.
