REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “The path that leads home.” Imagine you are a child who has journeyed far away from home with a guardian into a densely populated market square, and then all of a sudden, you lose your guardian. How do you get home after searching and not finding your guardian? The obvious answer is to begin to find the path that leads home. “A path that leads home” generally refers to a journey of return; metaphorically, it means the search and journey to one’s place of comfort, belonging, and spiritual fulfilment. We shall reflect on the fact that the Trinity empowers us and shows the path that leads home to eternal life. Trinity is the doctrine that God is one God existing in three coeternal and coequal persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. These three are distinct persons but share one divine essence or nature. This concept means that there is only one God, but this one God exists as a “three-in-one” being.

Beloved in the Lord, Jesus demonstrates to us that the Triune God or the Trinity is ever present and leading us in a confused, disobedient and dark world onto the path that leads home to eternal life. It is for this reason Jesus admonished His disciples, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15) It is important to understand that John 3:16 had already made it clear that “For God (the Father) so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) It means that if we believe by obeying the commandment that the Son (Jesus Christ) has brought from the Father to us, we shall be on the path that leads home to eternal life. Again, knowing that we live in a world of deceit and temptations that will impede the path that leads home to eternal life, Jesus assured His disciples, I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. (John 14:16-17). We see manifestation of the Trinity whereby the Father’s love is manifested by the Son who came into the world to show us the path that leads home to eternal life, and also binds us with the Holy Spirit who continues to guide, enable and sustain us on the path that leads home.

To further assure us that we are not alone on the path that leads home, Jesus assured us of the continuous manifestation of the Trinity in our lives so long as we continue to be faithful and obedient to the commandment He has given to us. As we are being led by the Holy Spirit or the Spirit of truth, Jesus assured us that, “I will not (physically) leave you as orphans; I will come to you (through the Holy Spirit). 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day, you will realise that I am in my Father, and you are in me (Co-existing with the Holy Spirit), and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I, too, will love them and show myself to them (Through the presence of the Spirit). (John 14:18-21) The insertions in parentheses or brackets are mine to help us understand the manifestation of the Trinity in our lives, even as we journey on the path that leads home. The key lesson is that we are not alone in the world as disciples of Jesus Christ. Let us remain faithful to our calling by not only hearing and reading the Word of God but also obeying as commanded by Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. It is only through this obedience that we can experience the impact of the Trinity in our lives. Beloved in the Lord, having experienced the Trinity and the path that leads home to eternal life, Jesus now commissions us to invite others to experience the Triune God and the path that leads home when He commands us to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

In summary, we have discovered that in the world of darkness and temptations to go wayward, the Trinity empowers us and shows the path that leads home to eternal life.

PRAYER

Dear Triune God, we totally submit our will to you. May we continue to experience the Love of God through His son, Jesus Christ, who continues to intercede on our behalf and may the Holy Spirit continue to sustain us on the path of truth that leads us home to eternal life.
