REFLECTION

The theme for our reflection is “What gold can’t buy” The phrase “what gold can’t buy” means that certain things are of such great value that they cannot be purchased with gold or money. We shall reflect on the fact that gold can’t buy wisdom because wisdom comes from the fear of God.

In Job 28:12-19, Job proclaims to his friends that pure gold and other precious riches cannot buy wisdom. While humans can skillfully extract valuable materials from the earth, they cannot unearth true wisdom, which is far more valuable and elusive. The passage uses gold and other gems as a symbol for all worldly wealth, emphasising that wisdom is a gift that transcends all earthly measures of value. It is important to note that gold cannot buy wisdom, but one will become wise when he or she fears and obeys the Lord.  In the Book of Job, we are told, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom…,” (Job 28:28). Again, Proverbs 9:10 tells us that  “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” When we fear the Lord, by obeying His Commandment and doing His will, we become wise and successful. It is for this reason Joshua admonished us, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous. (Joshua 1:8). Christians are admonished to study the word of God from infancy till we depart from this world. It is the only way to be wise in this world and to live a meaningful life to the glory of God.

In summary, we have discovered that gold can’t buy wisdom because wisdom comes from the fear of God. Shalom.
