REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “A Fortress.” A fortress is a military stronghold, often a strongly fortified town. We shall reflect on the truth that God is our fortress in whom we find refuge. Psalm 94:17-23 speaks of the psalmist’s reliance on God for help against oppressors, finding comfort in God’s presence during distress, and affirming that corrupt rulers who plot evil against the innocent will face divine justice; God, as the ultimate defender, will turn their wickedness back on themselves, punishing them for their sins and serving as the psalmist’s refuge and strength.
Beloved in the Lord, just as a child runs to their father or mother as a refuge in times of distress or trouble, we too must see God as our fortress and seek refuge in Him during times of distress and challenges. The Psalmist declared: “The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge” (Psalms 94:21-22).
In times of fear, uncertainty, and anxiety, God remains our fortress. He is the ultimate refuge, protector, and source of spiritual security, offering safety, strength, and deliverance from our enemies and troubles. Joseph, David, Hanna, and Daniel were examples of Biblical characters who have proven to us that when we make God our fortress, He will not put us to shame. We are greatly encouraged by the Psalmist’s faith and declaration to put our hope and confidence in none other than God, for “He will repay them for their sins
and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them. (Psalms 94:23). Dear friend, even as we make God our fortress, let us remember the admonishment of Paul, when he wrote, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:19-21)
In summary, the reflection draws upon Psalm 94:17-23 to establish God as our true fortress and refuge. Just as a stronghold offers military protection, God offers spiritual security, safety, and deliverance from distress, fear, and wicked enemies. The Psalmist’s declaration that the Lord is their rock and fortress serves as an encouragement to believers to place their faith and hope entirely in God, who is ultimately the protector of the righteous and the judge of the wicked.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, our Eternal Fortress, we thank You that in a world filled with trouble, uncertainty, and anxiety, You remain our rock and ultimate refuge. When the wicked rise up, and distress surrounds us, help us to run to You, knowing that in You alone we find unshakeable safety, strength, and security. Embolden our faith, O Lord, that we may trust in Your protection and rest in Your promise that You will deliver us and repay all wickedness. May our hearts find peace under the shadow of Your wing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
