REFLECTION

The theme of our reflection is Righteousness Through Faith, based on Romans 3:21-31. To understand this deeply, we must first look at what these words mean. Righteousness is not just about being a “good person”; it is about having a right standing with God, as if we had never sinned. Faith is more than just believing facts; it is a total trust and reliance on God’s promises.

The key lesson in this passage is that no human being can ever be “good enough” to earn a place in heaven by following rules. Instead, God gives us His righteousness as a free gift when we put our trust in Jesus Christ. Before this passage, the Apostle Paul spent much of his letter explaining that everyone—regardless of their background—has failed to meet God’s perfect standard. In these verses, he shares the glorious “but now,” showing us the way back to God.

The Way to God is Open to All

The first major lesson is that Righteousness comes through Jesus, not through our own efforts. Paul writes, “But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known… This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe” (Romans 3:21-22). For a long time, people thought that following the Ten Commandments perfectly was the only way to please God. However, Paul reminds us that “there is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:22-23).

Think of it like this: if two people try to jump across the Atlantic Ocean, one might jump further than the other, but both will fall into the water. In the same way, while some people may seem “better” than others, we all fall short of God’s perfect holiness. We need a bridge, and that bridge is Jesus.

Justified by Grace

The second lesson is that our salvation is a gift of grace. Paul explains that we are “justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24). To be “justified” is a legal term. It means that even though we are guilty, the Judge looks at us and declares us “not guilty” because Jesus paid our penalty.

God did this to show His justice. He could not simply ignore sin, so “God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood” (Romans 3:25). This means Jesus took the punishment we deserved so that we could receive the life He deserved.

In our daily lives, we often feel we must work for everything we get. If you want a promotion, you work hard. If you want a trophy, you practice. But with God, the “trophy” of eternal life is already won. We simply have to receive it. As Ephesians 2:8 reminds us: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

Faith Excludes Boasting

Finally, this passage teaches us humility. Because righteousness is a gift, no one can brag about being “more holy” than someone else. Paul asks, “Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded” (Romans 3:27). Whether we have been a “good person” our whole lives or have made many mistakes, we all come to God the same way: through faith.

This truth should change how we treat others. We should not look down on anyone, because we are all saved by the same mercy. Our focus shifts from “Look what I did for God” to “Look what God did for me.”

Conclusion: A New Way to Live

In summary, Romans 3:21-31 teaches us that we cannot save ourselves through the law. We are all sinners in need of a Saviour, and God has provided that Saviour in Jesus Christ. We are justified freely by His grace, and this righteousness is available to everyone who believes.

I encourage you today to stop trying to “earn” God’s love. You already have it. Your call to action is to surrender your pride and your “good works” at the feet of Jesus. Trust in His finished work on the cross rather than your own efforts. Let this peace transform how you live, making you a person of gratitude rather than a person of duty.

Prayer

“Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your righteousness is a gift I do not have to earn. I admit that I have fallen short of Your glory. I put my full trust in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for my sins. Thank You for justifying me and giving me a right standing with You. Help me to live every day in the freedom of Your grace. Amen.”
