REFLECTION
The theme for our reflection is “An Everlasting Covenant.” To understand this theme, we must look at two important words. An “everlasting” thing is something that lasts forever, never ending and never changing. A “covenant” is a solemn, binding agreement or a holy promise between two parties—in this case, between God and His creation. The key lesson in this Scripture is that God is a faithful promise-keeper who has committed Himself to protecting and preserving life on Earth forever. This passage follows the great flood, a time when God judged the world for its wickedness. However, after the waters went down, God did not leave humanity in fear. Instead, He reached out to Noah to establish a new relationship based on a permanent promise of peace.
The Promise of God’s Faithfulness
The first lesson we learn is that God’s covenant is a gift of His grace. It was not something Noah earned, but something God freely gave. God promised that He would never again use a flood to destroy all living things. The Scripture tells us, “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth” (Genesis 9:9-11).
This shows us that God cares for all of His creation, not just humans. Today, this reminds us that even when we see natural disasters or face personal “floods” of trouble, God is still committed to the survival and well-being of the world. He is a God of life, not destruction.
The Sign of Hope
God did not just speak the promise; He gave a visible sign to remind us of it. He chose the rainbow to be a bridge between heaven and earth. The Bible says, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth” (Genesis 9:12-13).
Every time we see a rainbow, we are reminded that God remembers His promise. In our daily lives, we need signs of hope when things look dark. Just as the rainbow appears after the rain, God’s mercy appears after judgment. God tells us through the prophet Ezekiel that He wants us to choose life: “For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!” (Ezekiel 18:32). Our part in this covenant is to turn away from sin and live in a way that honours the God who keeps us safe.
The Ultimate Fulfilment in Christ
This everlasting covenant with Noah points us toward an even greater promise found in Jesus Christ. While the rainbow promised that the physical world would not be destroyed by water again, Jesus provides a covenant that saves our souls from eternal death. The Scripture reminds us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” (John 3:16-17).
Just as Noah and his family had to enter the ark to be safe, we enter into God’s everlasting covenant by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. As the Bible says, “…Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him” (Hebrews 9:28). Because of this, we should live every day with gratitude, offering ourselves to God as a “living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God” (Romans 12:1).
Conclusion
In summary, the everlasting covenant is proof of God’s unending love and His desire to be in a relationship with us. He has promised to preserve the earth and has given us the rainbow as a sign of His faithfulness. Most importantly, He has extended this covenant to us through Jesus Christ, offering us a way to live forever with Him.
Call to Action: Today, I encourage you to trust in God’s promises. When you face storms in your life, look for “the rainbow”—the evidence of God’s goodness. Let us repent of our sins and live according to His will, knowing that “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is his faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). Do not wait; “now is the time of God’s favour, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your everlasting covenant and Your great faithfulness. Thank You for the promise that You will never leave us nor forsake us. We ask for the strength to live as people of the covenant, holy and pleasing to You. Help us to trust in Your mercy every day and to share the hope of Jesus Christ with a world that needs Your peace.
