REFLECTION

The theme “GRACE EXPRESSED IN JESUS’ MINISTRY” is a beautiful reminder of how God’s unearned love works in our everyday lives. When we look at this theme, two main words stand out: grace and ministry. Grace is God’s unconditional love and kindness given to us, even though we do not deserve it and cannot earn it. Ministry is the work of serving, helping, and caring for others. Therefore, grace expressed in Jesus’ ministry means how Jesus showed God’s deep love and kindness through His actions, words, and miracles.

In Mark 5:25-34, the key lesson is that God’s grace is always available to everyone, no matter how broken, isolated, or hopeless they feel. This passage tells the story of a woman who had suffered from a bleeding condition for twelve long years. In her society, this illness made her “unclean,” meaning she was not allowed to touch anyone or join in community worship. She had spent all her money on doctors, but instead of getting better, she grew worse. She was physically weak, financially broke, and completely alone. It was in this state of total helplessness that she encountered Jesus.

The first great lesson we see in this story is that Jesus’ grace is accessible to the desperate. The woman had reached the end of her own strength. She had heard about Jesus, and she believed that just touching His clothes would heal her. Because of the large crowd, she had to sneak up behind Him. Mark 5:27-28 says, “When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.’” She did not have a fancy prayer or a formal introduction. She simply reached out in faith.

Jesus did not get angry with her for touching Him. Instead, His grace responded immediately. Mark 5:29 tells us, “Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.” This shows us that we do not need to be perfect to come to Jesus. Today, a person might feel ruined by past mistakes or overwhelmed by a difficult situation, like a failing marriage or a severe illness. Just like this woman, when we reach out to Jesus in our brokenness, His grace meets us right where we are. This matches what is written in Hebrews 4:16, which invites us to “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Another vital lesson is that Jesus’ grace restores our identity and dignity. Healing the woman’s body was only the first part of what Jesus wanted to do. He stopped the crowd and asked who touched Him, not to punish her, but to bring her out of hiding. Mark 5:33 says, “Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.”

Instead of rebuking her, Jesus spoke words of deep affection and peace. In Mark 5:34, He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” By calling her “Daughter,” Jesus gave her back her place in society. She was no longer an outcast; she was a child of God. This is exactly how grace works. It does not just fix our problems; it restores our value. For example, when someone repents and turns away from a life of addiction or crime, God’s grace does not just stop the bad habit. It cleanses their conscience and gives them a brand-new identity as a beloved child of God, as 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

In summary, this powerful story shows us that Jesus’ ministry is defined by a grace that welcomes the outcast, heals the broken, and restores lost dignity. The woman with the issue of blood came to Jesus in secret, carrying years of pain and shame, but she left completely whole, publicly loved, and restored.

Today, you are invited to respond to this grace. If you are carrying a burden that feels too heavy, or if you feel isolated by your circumstances, do not stay away from Jesus. Make a conscious choice to bring your worries, your pain, and your sins to Him. Turn to Him in prayer today, trust in His love, and allow His amazing grace to transform your life.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for Your wonderful grace that knows no bounds. Thank You that You do not push me away when I am broken, weak, or full of mistakes. Just like the woman in the scripture, I reach out to You today. Please heal my hurts, forgive my sins, and restore my peace. Give me the faith to trust You in all situations, and help me to show this same grace to the people around me. Amen.
