As evening approached, the disciples became worried. They saw a vast crowd in a remote area with no food available. Their natural reaction was to send the people away so they could fend for themselves. “As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food’” (Matthew 14:15).

However, Jesus challenged their way of thinking with a remarkable command: “Jesus replied, ‘They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat’” (Matthew 14:16).

Jesus wants us to be channels of His generosity rather than bystanders who push problems onto others. When we see poverty, hunger, or distress in our communities, Jesus asks us not to look away or assume someone else will solve it. He invites us to step forward and share what we have.

3. Jesus Multiplies Our Little

The disciples felt overwhelmed because all they could find was a small lunch. “‘We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,’ they answered” (Matthew 14:17). Humanly speaking, this was nowhere near enough for over five thousand people. Yet Jesus said, “‘Bring them here to me’” (Matthew 14:18).

Jesus took what was small, looked up to heaven, gave thanks, broke the bread, and gave it back to the disciples to distribute. The result was miraculous: “They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over” (Matthew 14:20).

This teaches us that no gift is too small when given to Jesus. Whether it is a small amount of money, a simple meal, or a modest talent, when we place it in Christ’s hands with thanksgiving, He multiplies it to bless many others.
