REFLECTION
The theme for this meditation is “A Trusted Advisor.” To understand this theme, we must clarify its two core words. To be trusted means to be reliable, honest, and worthy of deep confidence. An advisor is a guide or counsellor who offers sound insight, direction, and wisdom to help someone make the right choice. Therefore, a trusted advisor is a faithful companion whose counsel is rooted in truth, whose character is upright, and whose desire is to see others walk in the right direction.
From 1 Samuel 9:5–10, we discover that God often places trusted advisors in our lives during seasons of weariness, confusion, and search. True advisors do not merely tell us what we want to hear; they redirect our focus towards God, offer practical solutions when resources seem scarce, and point us towards divine destiny.
In Israel’s history, leadership was transitioning from the period of the judges to the monarchy. Saul, the son of Kish, was sent on a tedious journey to look for his father’s lost donkeys. This fruitless search brought him and his servant to the district of Zuph, exhausted and ready to surrender. In the broader biblical calendar, seasons of restoration and release are central to Israel’s story, especially through the Jubilee celebration (Leviticus 25:10). The Year of Jubilee, observed every fiftieth year, was a holy season of liberty where debts were cancelled, ancestral property was returned to original owners, and enslaved people regained freedom. It signified a complete divine reset—God restoring what was lost, redeeming the weary, and setting people on a new path of hope. Just as the Jubilee represented God’s intervention to recover what was missing and restore dignity, God used a simple servant in a moment of loss to guide Saul towards Samuel the prophet, leading Saul directly into his divine appointment as king.
Key Lessons from the Passage
1. A Trusted Advisor Provides Hope When We Want to Give Up
When Saul grew exhausted after days of searching without success, despair set in. Saul proposed turning back: “Come, let’s go back, or my father will stop thinking about the donkeys and start worrying about us” (1 Samuel 9:5). Saul’s perspective was limited by fatigue and anxiety. However, his servant offered a fresh outlook filled with faith: “Look, in this town there is a man of God; he is highly respected, and everything he says comes true. Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take” (1 Samuel 9:6).
A faithful advisor lifts our gaze when our strength fails. In daily life, we often encounter dead ends in our careers, relationships, or personal ventures. When we are ready to resign and walk away in frustration, godly counsel steps in to remind us that God still has an answer. As Proverbs 11:14 reminds us, “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.”
2. A Trusted Advisor Offers Practical Solutions, Not Just Sympathy
Saul raised another genuine dilemma: they had run out of provisions to honour the prophet. Saul asked, “If we go, what can we give the man? The food in our sacks is gone. We have no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?” (1 Samuel 9:7). The servant did not merely validate the problem; he provided the answer from his own pocket: “Look,” he said, “I have a quarter of a shekel of silver. I will give it to the man of God so that he will tell us what way to take” (1 Samuel 9:8).
A trusted advisor does not complain about obstacles; they participate in solving them. When people face complex difficulties, helpful friends do not stop at offering words of sympathy. They contribute their skills, time, or modest resources to help build a bridge forward. As Galatians 6:2 teaches, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.”
3. A Trusted Advisor Points Us to God’s Purpose
The servant knew that human wisdom was not enough. He directed Saul straight to a spiritual authority: “Let’s go there now. Perhaps he will tell us what way to take” (1 Samuel 9:6). Saul listened and agreed: “Good,” Saul said to his servant. “Come, let’s go.” So they set out for the town where the man of God was (1 Samuel 9:10).
What Saul thought was an ordinary search for missing livestock was actually God’s arrangement to anoint him as leader over Israel. A trusted advisor aligns us with God’s overarching purpose rather than worldly shortcuts. We see this principle in Proverbs 27:9, which says, “Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.” When we receive counsel anchored in the fear of the Lord, our everyday troubles become doorways to divine purpose.
Conclusion and Call to Action
The story of Saul and his servant teaches us that wisdom does not depend on social status or title. A humble servant became a vessel of destiny because his advice was timely, practical, and directed towards God. A trusted advisor speaks faith over despair, offers tangible help in times of need, and points others towards God’s guiding light.
Take a careful look at your circle of influence today. Who speaks into your life when you face discouragement? Examine the voices you listen to and intentionally choose counsellors who fear God, love truth, and act with integrity. Equally, ask yourself whether you are a trusted advisor to those around you. When friends and family come to you burdened, resolve not to fuel their fears or advise compromise. Commit today to be a voice of calm, practical generosity, and spiritual direction so that others may find their way to God’s will.

Heavenly Father, You are the Wonderful Counsellor and the source of all true wisdom.
I thank You for placing people in my life who speak truth, bring hope, and encourage me when my heart is faint. Forgive me for the moments I have listened to foolish counsel or allowed fear to dictate my choices.
Grant me the humility to receive godly correction and advice, regardless of who brings it. Surround me with faithful, wise, and trusted advisors who will consistently point me to Your presence. Cleanse my own heart, Lord, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit, so that my speech may bring life, practical help, and sound direction to anyone who is weary.
Lead my steps today, and let Your purpose prevail in all I do, in the precious name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
